MARY HIGGINS CLARK HITS THE SCREEN,
By Michael Butts (Berkeley Springs, WV USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Before I Say Goodbye (DVD)
I was always a fan of MURDER SHE WROTE, trying to outguess the hero in discovering who the murderer was. You'll find the same kind of mindless enjoyment in this adaptation of Mary Higgins Clark's novel. Sean Young plays an aspiring congresswoman whose selfish architect husband (Christopher Shyer) objects to her returning to the political scene. Her father is a congressman (Lloyd Bochner), so it seems natural to follow in his footsteps. But then hubby's boat explodes and Young is left a widower, but someone's trying to kill her! Peter Deluise is the chunky detective who tries to get to the bottom of the crimes. You won't have a whole lot of trouble figuring out the outcome, but it's fun and well performed.

Based on the Mary Higgins Clark novel of the same name, Before I Say Goodbye is a thriller that brings political intrigue, real estate and construction scams, and murder into the apparently idyllic life of Nell MacDermott (Sean Young), who is being groomed for a political position formerly held by her grandfather. Her architect husband Adam (Christopher Shyer) who is being considered for a prestigious contract is suddenly thrust into an explosive world that takes down Adam and some of his associates when his boat goes up in flames.
Sorting through the detritus of a life that has supposedly ended tragically, Nell is thrust into a world of secrets, betrayals and identity theft. Will Nell survive, as she digs deeper into the mysterious events surrounding the boat explosion, or will she, too, be targeted as she moves closer to the answers? This movie was compelling enough to hold my attention throughout, but like many made-for-TV movies, it doesn't really measure up to the book. Still...four stars. Laurel-Rain Snow

I like this one. Nice plot and finale. Sean played detective and a strong woman while searching for clues in her husband's murder. I won't give away the ending but it was intersting

A Perfect Disappointment,
By Dog-Man (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Before I Say Goodbye (DVD)
I like a special type of book when I'm commuting. The plot should have plenty of action, the sillier and more predictable the better. The characters should be easily identifiable and two-dimensional (one-dimensionable is even better). In short, the book should distract me without really keeping me from paying attention to the road. This book was perfect.
So why was I disappointed? The description of the novel on the back of the case said that after her husband's death, Nell begins to suspect "fowl play." There were no chickens in the book. I felt cheated. |
