This review is from: Before the Scalpel: What Everyone Should Know About Anesthesia (Perfect Paperback)
I found Dr. Dhars "Before the Scalpel" one of the most patient empowering books to date. A must read before any anesthetic procedure. This book explains step by step what is involved for the patient and the patients' rights. If you or someone you know is planning any kind of surgery get this book now. You'll feel better because knowledge is power, Patient Power.

Surgery is no laughing matter. "Before the Scalpel: What Everyone Should Know About Anesthesia" is an informative reference on the absolutely vital knowledge one must have before facing any type of surgery involving anesthesia, which is used in most types of serious surgery, from delivering children to plastic surgery to dental work. Seeking to adequately prepare potential patients or friends and family of patients, "Before the Scalpel" should strongly be considered.

Since reading this book, I have had surgery twice and my daughter and niece each had surgery once. Since we are usually very healthy, this could have been quite traumatic. Anesthesia was my main concern, but Dr. Dhar's book answered all my questions, leaving me calm and able to sleep peacefully through my own surgery and wait with less anxiety through my daughter's surgery. I highly recommend this book for anyone contemplating surgery.

It told me what I needed to know before surgery,

It's simple, the book told me what my doctor didn't. It answered all my questions and questions I didn't even know enough to ask. They say every patient should be an informed patient, at least now I know what to expect and what to ask.

This review is from: Before the Scalpel: What Everyone Should Know About Anesthesia (Perfect Paperback)
This book is informative to a point, albeit self-serving. The author addresses the kind of questions a young, healthy individual should ask, while underscoring how wonderful anesthesiologists are. The problem is that she never addresses the issues relating to older people who undergo anesthesia, possible cognitive loss or, as in the case of my family, a history of high sensitivity and extremely slow recovery.
It has been my experience that the medical community does not or will not recognize that some people do not recover fully from anesthesia or recover more slowly than is conveninent for the doctors or the facilities. The older the patient, the slower the return to normal and in those who may already have some cognitive loss or are likely to develop dementia, anesthesia may exacerbate the condition. This is important to many people and I wish the author (and others in the medical community) would address it.

The book was extremely informative. The writing style and content suitable for every range of individual who has limited or expert technical knowledge.
It is difficult to create a book that must have extensive detail yet holds the interest of the reader from start to finish. This succeeded brilliantly. I highly recommend this and look forward to more products[...]

This book should stand beside your dictionary on your bookshelf.,

The compilers of "Before the Scalpel" have done a momentous job of making anesthesia understandable and reassuring without missing a step or distorting the truth. Everyone I know is afraid of surgery, but the two things they worry about most are IF they will feel anything during the procedure or if, in fact, they will wake up.
Without creating a fearful mode while reading this book, the prospective patient learns WHAT to ask the anesthesiologist and what to tell him or her. This communication between the patient and anethetist is critical for the best outcome. The book is masterful in making this conversation able to be had when needed. Thanks for giving ALL of us who, at some point, will need anesthesia and this book as a resource that belongs in every home. |
