I read this book before I ever read The Incal, and though Before the Incal was written later, I recommend reading this book first if you haven't read either. Others may disagree with that, but I liked knowing the background of the world and characters before reading the Incal, which jumps into many things with little or no explanation. I have to say that I personally find Before the Incal superior to The Incal, both in its sublimely perfect art and its anarchic, touching, and hilarious story. The Incal may be more fantastic in scale, in sheer originality, and in the number of its ideas, but Before the Incal's dystopian sci fi world is so much more fleshed out and alive. It is breathtakingly rich in detail, full of vicious social satire, amazing caricatures of pornographic excess, and a mind blowing blend of sci fi and spiritual ideas. The wonderful characters are much more fleshed out as well, compared to mostly fairly flat characters in the Incal. The kindly cybocop mentor Kolbo-5 nearly broke my heart, and I love Deepo the concrete seagull more than any other animal in any story. He gets more attention here. Not to mention the always enraged Supra-Divinoid computer, the Technopope, the Prezident's clones, and John Difool's evil Aristo girlfriend Luz. Before the Incal is altogether better told and better looking (Zoran Janjetov became my favorite artist immediately) than The Incal, if I may be so bold. I honestly get the sense that Jodorowsky was still learning how to tell stories in comics with The Incal, as preposterously good as it is, and that by the time he did Before the Incal he had enormously developed the ideas hinted in the Incal and more fully mastered how to tell them through comics.Read more ›

This book, from the library bound cover (no unruly dust sleeves here!) to the final page, is an AMAZING prequel to the Incal. Jodorowsky's writing is very well served by Janetov's disciplined line work. The story is very good at starting somewhat normal, and then taking you to places you didn't see coming. Or at least didn't see from far away. I would give it a five star, but it's still very much a prequel and this is very evident by the bootstrapping of this story to the original Incal's narrative at the final pages of the book. It could have ended at diFool's logical jumping off point (if you don't get it, then read the original), and I would have been fine.

Very recommended to people who like the Incal by Jodo and Moebius.

Not for the PG-13 or even the R crowd. this is truly X-rated, in that there are a lot of extreme and shocking images thrown into the story. this is no surprise from the producer of Sacred Mountain and El Toro. If weird wild and visionary if Dadaist sci-fi is your thing, you'll never see or read better. Even at its high price, I am very glad I bought it.

One of the best Jodorowsky's works. Great art as well.

I admit I didn't pick up the comics when they came out. I did read some of the first few but just wasn't feeling it at the time, personally it seemed like the art was a moebius rip off. After reading the [...] again in its giant HC i just had to check out before the incal, GIANT.
If you know the big lebowski you know that no dude could not pick up this book having seen its luxurious cover image.
I'm very glad I did, i read it in one sitting and it really has a nice sweep. Its thought provoking and sincere like the rest of Jodo's works, no incal cash in here. The art is very good, more impressive in this large format, there is a little bit of experimentation into the midway point, but it really settles into its own unique moebiusesque groove in the final stretch.
The story is top quality, Jodorowsky is always good at subverting expectations with fine results.
Somebody give the guy $150,000,000 to do a movie already! I mean look at what he did with what $800,000?[...]
