5.0 out of 5 stars A work of genius
This is a brilliant book. Although I read it for the first time in second grade, it is my no means for children. Every time I read it, I discover a new layer of meaning; some plot point becomes clearer to me; an even is given new shades of color. It is impossible to absorb the book fully in one reading.

The author captures Claire's plight quite well, with poignant characterizations of her and the rest of the kids in their street gang. It's a fascinating, compelling book with deeply sympathetic characters; my personal favorite is Racer. This is a good read for anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book, November 12, 1999

I think this is a good book about runaways. I thought it was neat how they made Monopoly a game of real life, except they steal stuff from the places instead of buying it.

The Beggar's Ride
By Theresa Nelson

Summary:
Clare is this thirtheen year old girl, and is currently living with her mother. One day, she decides to leave because she wants to find out where her father went. She then goes to Atlantic City where she has to turn into a beggar. Luckily she finds this gang and she gets an opportunity to join if she passes a test. That is to steal a hotdog from a restaurant named Atlantic's Jack exactly where Morgan (her father) was last seen. As she continues to steal and look for Morgan, she gets closer to trouble especially near Griffey a man who sells kids, but she rides in an adventurous trip around the boardwalk.

Why I disliked this book:
Well I have a few reasons to dislike this book. The first is that it's very confusing depending on a part. Sometimes it just tells you something, and kind of leaves you to guess what it means. For example, the first sentence is "There should have been lightning". In my opinion, it is just plain annoying trying to read a book like this. Another thing that I dislike about this is that it kinds of skips from part to part making me wondering what happened during. The second chapter's first sentence is "Atlantic City". I mean it doesn't even tell you how she got there or when.

My favorite part of the book:
My favorite part of the book was when Clare had to pick where she had to steal from. I know stealing is not good, but it's amazing how they choose so well. They just roll the dice and wherever Clare landed on, then she had to go to that street in Atlantic City to steal.
