Beautiful Music,
By Tachi (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beggars & Saints (Audio CD)
this cd is simply great! i had no idea who jai uttal was until my dad got this cd as a gift, and i couldnt believe i hadn't heard from him before! the music is beautiful and a must for anyone who enjoys far-eastern sounds. most of the songs are sung in sanskrit, hindi and bengali and are accompanied by beautiful melodies. track 3, "be with you" as well as track 10 "conductor" are sung in english. "be with you" is a beautiful song and that song alone may be reason enough for anyone to purchase this cd. track 8, "beggars and saints" is a breath-taking instrumental piece that will not go unnoticed either. this is a great all-around cd as it has more "dancier" tracks as well as more relaxing ones as well. check it out; it won't be a waste of time! :)

Incredible and Hyonotic,

The best of Jai Uttals offerings (all worthwhile getting)---devotional, inspiratonal, and uplifting. Sets the vibration for the entire day, bringing the devotion ot traditional ragas to the heart and lifting the veils between East and West. The presence of Hanuman and the power of chant is extremely accessible. Doors open to the inner self through the listening of the entire CD. Enjoy.

Enchanting,
By A Customer
This review is from: Beggars & Saints (Audio CD)
This album makes me miss places I've never been, at least not in this lifetime. There is enough song style diversity so as to not become too monotonous. English lyrics combined with Eastern chants provide an interesting twist which sets Jai apart from the rest.

First class fusion of ancient and modern,

Jai's presentation of traditional bhajans is about the best I have heard for the unfamiliar ear. The music exudes a raw energy and the chanting is expertly done. I find it a real enhancement for inducing moods of devotion and spiritual ecstasy (well, the nearest I can manage to true ecstasy, at least). I sense that Jai is a Hanuman and Rama bhakta, and if you want to find out more about the moods of that devotion, then you might like to dip into the Ramayana. An excellent devotional version is the novelisation by Krishna Dharma.

Totally Awesome,

i accidentally walked into a Jai Uttal concert at the Ashkenaz Club in berkeley and never regretted it. It was the best 4 hours of dance music I ever listened to. beggars and saints is his best work so far. As an indian, it reminds me of the many hours Id spend back in India listening to religious chanting of Hare Rama Hare Krishna..Jai adds the Western touch..the beat..and its absolutely explosive..I wish Jai would tour other parts of the Unites States than California..There is a big potential audience of first and second generation indians whod love this..

Music for the Spirit,
This review is from: Beggars & Saints (Audio CD)
Jai Uttal's got to be a reincarnation of some Baul singer from North India; he reminds me so much of the fantastic chanters I heard in Uttara Pradesh. But Jai knows how to make this music work for a Western audience. He's a master of both hemispheres, East and West, and creates a musical fusion that's passionate and powerful.
Jai will make your soul sing. He's kirtan at its richest and best.

Multi-dimensional music that is healing, soothing and makes me want to dance at the same time. Even my one year old insists on hearing this CD over and over. Thanks, Jai!
