5.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to TKD, September 12, 2002

This review is from: Beginner Taekwondo Taekwondo Classic Series [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This was the first taekwondo tape I ever bought and it was a great help in getting my feet wet. There is a little of everything - history, korean terms, classroom etiquette, kicking, punching, hand strikes, target striking, self-defense, one step sparring, stances and a basic poomse. This is a lot to cover in an introductory tape, but the instruction is good, with plenty of use of both walk through and full speed demonstrations by the instructor. The explanations are easy to understand and although not in depth, more than enough for a beginner to get the hang of things. I'm kind of confused by the reviewer who said everything is being performed outside in a rose garden. 90% of the footage is in a dojang (school) on the mat. There were two repetitions of the poomse done outside (maybe for a little change of scenery?) and everything else was in a regular school atmosphere just like the one you'd expect to train in as a student. For a beginner tape, I think the amount and quality of instruction is just right. If you're beyond white or yellow belt level, check out something more advanced like the Kicking Fundamentals or Advanced Sparring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I found this tape, February 17, 2001

My kids are both black belts in Tae Kwon Do and I finally decide to sign up too. I bought this tape to help me get familiar with the moves at home and get in a little better shape.

It was very helpful for understanding the finer points of the white belt movements and for practicing the basics before getting involved in a class.

Now that I've started class, I sometimes pop in the tape to review. The class I'm in is fast moving and the instructor doesn't always stop to explain everything. It's nice to have the explanations on the tape to refer to, especially for the kicks, which I'm having a tough time with.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm recommending this to all of my white belts, May 7, 2002

As a taekwondo instructor, I've found that a lot of beginners are really confused by all of the new terms and skills that get thrown at them in class. Since finding this video in a catalog, I've been recommending it to all of my white belts as a home training tool. It doesn't have a lot of complicated explanations and sticks to the basics, so I don't have to worry them getting hurt of confused by trying to do too much too soon. I love Master Kim's tapes and this one is no exception.
