5.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to TKD
This was the first taekwondo tape I ever bought and it was a great help in getting my feet wet. There is a little of everything - history, korean terms, classroom etiquette, kicking, punching, hand strikes, target striking, self-defense, one step sparring, stances and a basic poomse. This is a lot to cover in an introductory tape, but the instruction is good, with plenty...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Information, but not much to practice with
Good information about Tae Kwon Do, but we would have liked more forms and moves in a practice format. You can watch them perform the moves, but they don't give you a view from your perspective that you can practice with. For example, it would have been nice to stand behind them and do the moves along with them.

This was the first taekwondo tape I ever bought and it was a great help in getting my feet wet. There is a little of everything - history, korean terms, classroom etiquette, kicking, punching, hand strikes, target striking, self-defense, one step sparring, stances and a basic poomse. This is a lot to cover in an introductory tape, but the instruction is good, with plenty of use of both walk through and full speed demonstrations by the instructor. The explanations are easy to understand and although not in depth, more than enough for a beginner to get the hang of things. I'm kind of confused by the reviewer who said everything is being performed outside in a rose garden. 90% of the footage is in a dojang (school) on the mat. There were two repetitions of the poomse done outside (maybe for a little change of scenery?) and everything else was in a regular school atmosphere just like the one you'd expect to train in as a student. For a beginner tape, I think the amount and quality of instruction is just right. If you're beyond white or yellow belt level, check out something more advanced like the Kicking Fundamentals or Advanced Sparring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I found this tape, February 17, 2001

My kids are both black belts in Tae Kwon Do and I finally decide to sign up too. I bought this tape to help me get familiar with the moves at home and get in a little better shape.

It was very helpful for understanding the finer points of the white belt movements and for practicing the basics before getting involved in a class.

Now that I've started class, I sometimes pop in the tape to review. The class I'm in is fast moving and the instructor doesn't always stop to explain everything. It's nice to have the explanations on the tape to refer to, especially for the kicks, which I'm having a tough time with.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm recommending this to all of my white belts, May 7, 2002

As a taekwondo instructor, I've found that a lot of beginners are really confused by all of the new terms and skills that get thrown at them in class. Since finding this video in a catalog, I've been recommending it to all of my white belts as a home training tool. It doesn't have a lot of complicated explanations and sticks to the basics, so I don't have to worry them getting hurt of confused by trying to do too much too soon. I love Master Kim's tapes and this one is no exception.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best [money] I could have spent, April 17, 2002
This review is from: Beginner Taekwondo Taekwondo Classic Series [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I signed up for tae kwon do lessons at my health club and was pretty lost after the first lesson. This tape was the first tkd tape I bought and a huge help in getting the hang of things. Being able to follow along and practice at home helped me keep up in a class of more experienced people. It was good to be able to slow down the movements on tape and break them down. This guy really knows what he's doing.

Best of all, I bought a "like new" copy and saved a few bucks!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent starting point, January 9, 2001

I bought this video shortly after I started tae kwon do classes and it has really helped me understand what is going on in class, especially at first when there was so much to remember that I found it hard to review and practice at home. I also learned some things here, especially the self-defense part, that I haven't learned in class. I'd recommend this for anyone new to tae kwon do or interested in getting a head start before signing up for classes. For a short tape, this is packed with info.

This was the first TKD tape I purchased and two years later I still recommend it to the new white belts at my school. As a beginner I had some trouble remembering everything I learned in class and it was nice to be able to go home, pop in tape and review the basics. Plus, Master Kim has lots of great little tips that my instructor didn't mention at the time and I found that these helped me progress faster than some of the other new people in class.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Get This if You are In a Class, March 10, 2004
By A Customer

This is an extremely weak 26 minute video that gives you an incredibly light overview on the basics. If you have paid for classes, you will get all of this content in the first few weeks of class. Don't waste your money on this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, February 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Beginner Taekwondo Taekwondo Classic Series [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video provides a little history, a little overview, and a videoed example of basic techniques. The gist of the video seems to be a demostration of what a front kick is, what a side kick is, etc. Not how to do a front kick, or how to do a side kick, etc. No details of striking surfaces, techniques, or targets are really mentioned. It seems to be more of an overview of "What is...." rather than "How to". Don't buy it for training. Young kids may get some value out of just knowing what each kick, or punch is called, the history explained, and the mention and explanation of a form.
