As a Mah jongg instructor, I try to read everything I can about the game in order to help my students learn more easily. After reading this book, all I can say is if you are interested in learning to play Mah Jongg buy this book!! It will help you. It is clearly written, beautifully illustrated, and understandable by the most beginner of beginners. It will also help you later as you improve your game. Handy for experienced players too, as it will clarify many misunderstandings people may have when playing. Go forth and Mahj! BB

Of the five books I've purchased this one is without a doubt written for the beginner. And, it will be useful for as long as I play the game of Mah Jongg! This is a very easy book to follow. And, if you do the exercises you will learn the game or become a better player.[[ASIN:080483878X Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg: How to Play the Game & Win

I have been playing American Maj Jongg for over a year. This book provides well written easy to follow explanations and instructions for novice as well as others who have some experience. The author provides quizes to help the reader check his understanding at the end of each chapter. The best parts of the book for me were the exercises he provided for individuals to practice such skills as chosing what hand to try to play from the card. You can't go wrong with this book if you want to play American Maj Jongg (National or American).

This is an excellent book for beginners and great for those who have been taught by others but need more insight into the correct procedures of playing the game. The print is large, the color of the tiles is clear, and the format is such that each step is clearly understood. Exercises are given to help a person experience what is written. At the end of each section is a quiz to determine how well the material was absorbed. I highly recommend this book for an easy explanation of the game and the rules.

Due to a printing error, a few copies of this book had some color problems of the kind that P. Radcliffe mentions. The good news is, if your copy is problematic, you may return it to the publisher for an exchange. There's no reason to miss out on this book--it really makes the game fun, even for a true beginner like me!

I have looked at and purchased more Mahjongg books than I want to admit to. American Mahjongg really brought it home to me. It is a basic step by step book that everyone can understand. There are no gaps here, it's all laid out in plain English. If you are learning to play the game and don't have an instructor by your side, this is a book you can comprehend and depend on to help you play your best game.

I recently purchased American Mah Jongg book with two goals in mind. My first goal was to refresh myself, since I have not played for several years. The other goal was to teach my friends how to play in a manner that is easy, informative and fun. The Mah Jongg book is written in an easy format, provides history and actually provides me with order to how I teach the game. A Great Buy!

I purchased this book after receiving a Mah Jongg set for Christmas. I was concerned because the game seemed so complicated and the instructions provided were unintelligible due to a poor translation into English.

This book made the game very simple to understand and easy play! It does take time to learn, but the book is written in a conversational style with a synopsis at the end of each section (and a quiz to see how much you remember and if you need to review) so instead of feeling frustrated you really feel like someone is teaching you as you go along.

I recommend having one person read the book and learn the game and then explaining the rules/strategy to those in the group with a mock play including the tiles. Keep the book right next to the game for quick reference, but the book itself is written so well that pretty soon what seemed complicated will become second nature.
