About the Author

Jack Kornfield was trained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand, Burma, and India and has taught around the world since 1974. He also holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. He is a co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society and of the Spirit Rock Center. He lives in northern California.

I bought this CD in hopes of listening to it several times; picking up new things here and there, but really, it is just as the title says "beginner's guide." Guess I was expecting a little bit more... I listened to it twice, then moved on. If you are totally 100% new to Buddhism, then this in an okay introduction; though perhaps you money would be better spent on The Complete Idiot's Guide to Zen Living or Buddhism for Dummies.

Another reviewer panned this as too short and overly simplistic. I would give it at least 4 stars. It IS short: about one hour, which makes the full price a little questionable. And it IS for beginners who might know little or nothing about Buddhism. This stuff said, it provides an insightful, condensed, and pleasant introduction to Buddhism, a brief look at its history, a summary of its central teachings, and a survey of its different forms, etc. If you are into yoga, have tried meditation, are curious about mindfulness, or just want to learn about the principals of Buddhism in a non-preachy way, this might be a good choice. I enjoyed it.
