Book Description

January 30, 2006
A Beginner's Guide to Gambas is the first definitive reference for the Linux-based Gambas programming language. Gambas ships with a graphical development environment based on the Basic programming language. It supports object-oriented programming and is similar to Microsoft's Visual Basic product. Gambas uses the Qt toolkit and supports other toolkits like GTK+. With Gambas, you can quickly design a user interface, access databases from MySQL, SQLite, and PostgreSQL, or remotely pilot KDE applications using the DCOP protocol. Rittinghouse masterfully describes the details of this new language with plenty of examples and illustrations that make it easy to understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great hands-on learning course., August 24, 2007
This review is from: A Beginner's Guide to Gambas: Programming (Paperback)
Excellent presentation of the subject. I enjoyed learning from the example programs he used. I have taught myself other languages and this has been the best experience, enjoyable. Not boring.

On the constructive criticism side, there were a quite a few programming errors and misprints? throughout the book. It appeared to be written in 2005, would have been nice to have a correction sheet. Although it gave me the opportunity to DEBUG some of the examples and increase my knowledge of debugging. Who knows?

With the release of Gambas 2 a lot of the book becomes obsolete, but you don't have many other choices. It can still be helpful in an arena where documentation is at a premium.
