Book Description

Beginner's Guide to September 1, 2002
The embroidery is traditionally worked on close-woven cotton with cotton thread and it has a great elegance. Flowing floral patterns intertwine with stems and leaves, the smooth satin stitches contrasting wonderfully with the padded, knotted stitchery and untextured background. These natural designs are often fairly large and the sculptured patterns have an appealing bold quality, which is enhanced by the absence of color and the addition of knitted fringed fringes. Pat Trott explains all the techniques with clear step-by-step photography and inspiring easy-to-follow projects. This book will be welcomed by beginners and also embroiderers of all skill levels.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Karenplatt.co.uk: Mountmellick is my favourite style of embroidery. I particularly love Yvette Stanton's book on the subject (see review of 'Mountmellick Embroidery'), which I believe to be the quintessential guide so I was intrigued to see this book for beginners. This book demonstrates thirteen stitches used in Mountmellick embroidery with clear instructions accompanied by photographs. It also includes knitted fringes, how to start by framing the cloth ready for embroidery. Two projects follow with line drawings and full instructions and there are further line drawings for you to work on yourself. This 64-page book is a very good beginners guide, even if it does look rather dated in appearance, the patterns and stitches never go out of date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mountmellick Embroidery, January 10, 2008

I am a beginner to this type of embroidery although I do many different types of embroidery. I think this is an excellant book for those of us that have not been familiar with Mountmellick Embroidery. It gives the history of this form of needlework along with great illiustrations. Gives list of supplies needed as well as what fabric and threads to use. It starts with a smaller simpler project with pattern. Each pattern you would choose would gradually get a little tougher. Quite a few patterns as well as instructions for the fringe. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to get started with Mountmellick Embroidery.

I love the detail in this book. As a newcomer to embroidery I hesitate to start a project unless the instructions are clear and easily understood and this book delivers. The illustrations are wonderful, too, as are the projects. I'd recommend this book without hesitation to anyone interested in learning Mountmellick embroidery.
