A "Must Have" Book for the Novice and the Experience Modeler, July 19, 1999
This review is from: Beginner's Guide to N Scale Model Railroading: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started (Model Railroad Handbook) (Paperback)
Beginners Guide to N Scale Model Railroading has everything you will need to know to get started. It's all here...planning, benchwork, trackwork, scenery, electrical wiring as well as color photos of small and large layouts. This book includes a listing of the tools you will need, a list of suppliers and organizations, illustrations of the different locomotives, servicing and repairing your engines, choosing couplers, lingo you will need to know, and there's even an N scale ruler printed in the margin, plus much, much more! I purchased the first edition of this book over twenty-five years ago and literally wore it out. I now have this edition which has been extensively revised and updated. You won't find any outdated or confusing information here. Beginners Guide to N Scale Model Railroading will more than pay for itself and will serve you for years to come. It's the one book you will want to have at hand as your model railroad progresses.

Good introduction, not just for N Scale, but for the hobby, November 18, 2010
This review is from: Beginner's Guide to N Scale Model Railroading: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started (Model Railroad Handbook) (Paperback)
Looking for books on modelling at the library, one of the few I came across was this one. As a V-Scaler what I really wanted was a book that could introduce me to some of the basic concepts/layouts of model railroads and their prototypes, and I found that this book didn't disappoint. While much of the middle is devoted to the actual construction process, there's also detailed entries that guide readers on how to choose rolling stock, historical innovations in traction, and the types of facilities needed for a proper depot.
I've taken so many notes from this book and it's really helped me to get started in a hobby I've dreamed of starting for years. If you need instructions specific to a certain gauge, this may not be for you, but it's a well-balanced general guide for those in the planning stages of a model. This particular book is out of print, but as it's a product of Model Railroader magazine, there's likely a more recent edition to work off of, as well.
