Book Description

November 15, 2001 0971617007 978-0971617001
Discover the joy of music. The experienced musician, the interested beginner, or the curious listener will benefit from learning the basics of reading and composing music. Just as a driver needs to know the rules of the road, a musician needs to know the rules of music theory.

The Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Music gives you the tools to improve your playing, composing, and listening skills. Ages 12 to 112 will refer to the valuable information in this book again and again.

This book covers the basic theory needed to begin reading music as well as for writing your own musical compositions. Beginning with the basics: basic definitions, note values, key signature, etc. and moving on to more advanced theory including modulations, suspended chords, inversions and cadences, this book flows so that the beginning student can start at the beginning, and working through the book a chapter at a time will gradually gain a concrete knowledge in music theory. The advanced student will be able to begin with the section most beneficial to his or her current quest for knowledge. With over 100 clearly laid out examples learning music theory has never been easier.

Each aspect of music theory includes examples written in musical notation, as well as guitar and piano fingering positions. The examples used are not taken from classical composition, rather they were written by the author for the sole purpose of getting a particular point across. They are not complicated, drawn out, or overloaded with unnecessary notes, they are simple, concise and to the point. Classical compositions, written by musical masterminds, are wonderful works of art, however, for beginners, this book includes more simplified examples which should be used only as learning tools. Once the theory is learned, you can go on to compose your own wonderful musical pieces as well as learn and understand those wonderful compositions by musical masterminds.

A section on guitar solos is also included. After perfecting the patterns in the Solo section the guitarist will be able to play solo in any key and any style of music.

One of the most spectacular aspects of this book is the Music Theory Summary Sheet found at the end of the book. This summary sheet is jam packed with important theory information. Chords, scales, flats, sharps, note values, intervals, chords chord progressions and much more can all be found on this summary sheet.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This is one of the best books on music theory that we have seen in years. The author takes you through the basics and into more advanced theory in a conversational way that even a child could understand. The examples are clear and easy to play enhancing the reader's learning adventure. The Music Theory Summary Sheet located at the back of the book is a completely new concept that is ahead of it's time. We could not recommend a better book.

From the Author

Music theory may seem to some an unattainable knowledge, mired in history and long, complicated excerpts from famous classical music. My intention in writing this book is to share the wonderful world of theory with the beginning, average, and experienced musician using easily understood text and examples.

I sincerely hope you enjoy this learning experience, as music is an art to be enjoyed and cherished. My goal is to introduce you to the wonderful world of acoustical art.

This review is from: The Beginner's Guide to Understanding Music (Plastic Comb)
I wanted this book for sentimental reasons, Richard Bell is my uncle who passed away a few years ago. I recently started guitar lessons, and am so happy I have the book now, it is easy to read, understand and follow. I would recommend this book to anyone starting out in piano or guitar, I found it to be very useful. I bought two copies, one copy I keep at home on my shelf for sentimental reasons and the other comes with me everywhere for when I want to study.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Author Was My Uncle, January 13, 2005
This review is from: The Beginner's Guide to Understanding Music (Plastic Comb)
The man that wrote this wonderful book was my uncle, Richard Bell. He was the only person I knew that would be so swept away by any type of music that he would play and play for hours. He was the best uncle I've ever had and ever could have asked for. He gave me one of his books and wrote a very personal letter inside because the year the book got published he was begining to teach me how to play guitar 1 on 1. What a wonderful teacher he was! I wish he would have started his own guitar school! I know things that you wouldn't know and I'm not going to say what happened but things turned very ugly in his life and he always new where to take his feelings...to his music. I was amazed at how long it took him to write this book, because he needed and wanted every part of this book to be absoultly perfect, so that anyone of any age over 12 would be able to understand and be able to be gifted with the knowledge of music. He would be very proud to hear that he gets 5 star ratings from people who have purchased this book. When I saw that I knew how happy it made me! So please when you read this book think of how my uncle Richard Bell would want you to learn..."just take your time, dont rush, and you'll get it!" Are the words I live by when I think about him and pick up that guitar and start playing. Thank you for your time.

This review is from: The Beginner's Guide to Understanding Music (Plastic Comb)
I personally have read this book! The Authors have real insight and understand music more than I thought music could be understood. this book unlocks the secrets of how to compose music like the greats do(or did) - like Led Zepplin or The Eagles. timeless secrets that put it all into reach. Even though this book covers how to read and write music, it gets advanced in an amazing curve that you can follow, and ends with advanced concepts that are above the norm.
