The beginners woodcarving book is easy to understand & very helpful. The carving knife provided seems very adequate. So far I believe this will be a hobby that I'll work with for a long time. I have since purchased other items from the same people. Diamond hone set, beginner gouge set & a carving glove & thumb protecter. They also will help you with picking the correct items. Very enjoyable.

I bought this set for my 12 year old son. He is excited to finally get to carve in "real wood" rather than soap or wax. The pre-cut forms and directions are giving him enough of a start that he is not overly frustrated and is successful. He is not too interested in reading the directions, but is finding the pictures qite helpful. I have had to help him a little, but he is able to do most of it on his own. He is working on the boot at present, has not tried the other projects yet. The little tool is quite sharp! The book shows how to use it safely, but I would supervise at first to make sure safety considerations are followed.

I got this 2 years ago for myself to play around with, and I loved it. It got me into carving, and I still use the knife and gouges that I got with the kit. The service is also really good- they replaced a missing gouge immediately. I recommend this for anyone getting into carving since the book is really useful, and the wooden cutouts are a great way to start carving without a lot of the hassle.
