About the Author

Wallace B. “Wally” McClure graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1990 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He continued his education there, receiving a master’s degree in the same field in 1991. Since that time, he has done consulting and development for such companies as The United States Department of Education, Coca-Cola, Magnatron, and Lucent Technologies, a web search engine, a web 2.0 company among others. Products and services have included work with ASP, ADO, XML, and SQL Server, as well as numerous applications in the Microsoft .NET Framework. Wally has been working with the .NET Framework since the summer of 2000. Wally McClure specializes in building applications that have large numbers of users and large amounts of data. He is a Microsoft MVP, an ASPInsider, a member of the INETA Speaker’s Bureau, and a partner in Scalable Development, Inc. He’s infamous for his monthly “Control Freak” column in ASP.NET Pro Magazine, and has been developing software solutions for leading companies in the Seattle area for nearly two decades. Craig Shoemaker teaches software developers about object-oriented development, architecture, and best practices in .NET. I bought this book based on a long, positive history with WROX products. I've got a whole shelf full of these volumes on various topics and they've historically been the best in the business.

Not so with this volume. These guys are obviously uberdorks who got an A in Computer Science and a C- in Language Arts. The writing is scattered, clunky, and generally subpar, making it very difficult to decipher portions of the book - let alone learn any programming disciplines from it. (In that regard, the editor(s) and proofreader of the volume also deserved to be flogged with a wet noodle.)

I expect a far more professional approach and delivery than this book provides. I'll struggle through it and learn the material, but it shouldn't be this difficult... The time of technical training manuals being written by eggheads with no affinity for interpersonal communication passed twenty years ago. Shame on WROX for releasing this volume in such disarray.

The C# examples work.

The shopping cart download was full of CRCs.

I ended up coding in VB for the first couple of chapters, then read the rest as only so much time.

synopsis > 2 little info, repetitive, no VB, didn't learn much
