5.0 out of 5 stars Have read the book, have heard the author, November 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
Not only have I read "How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith," I had the privilege of hearing 12 weeks of classes by Jim Burnham explaining the content of this short book. My husband was thinking about becoming Catholic at that time, and Jim convinced him, beyond any shadow of a doubt, of the authenticity of the Catholic Church and the truth of her teachings. I teach RCIA at my church, and this book has helped me immensely in explaning and defending the Church's teachings. This is a must-read for anyone who is considering becoming Catholic or anyone who wants to defend the Catholic faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for small groups, May 2, 2001
This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
I've used this concise booklet in two men's small groups and have found it to be an excellent place for individuals to begin answering the questions that Catholics are commonly asked.

-Why do Catholics believe in purgatory when the word "purgatory" isn't even in the Bible?

-Why do Catholics pray to Mary and the saints when the Bible says Jesus is the "one mediator between God and man"?

This easy-to-use booklet is perfect for answering such questions. Using the Bible, the authors help those using this book to be able to explain and defend their faith.

The book answers the most common objections to the faith, including Mary, purgatory, the Eucharist, confession, and many other Catholic doctrines.

If we do not know our faith, how can we defend it? This book is a great resource for helping people to know their faith and defend it. It is the first book in a three-part series on Catholic apologetics. I highly recommend it, especially for small groups. It's inexpensive enough that each group member can purchase their own copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Apologetics 1 and series--the best yet, May 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
I spent one day engulfed in the first of the series--so renewed in my own beliefs--with references for explanation to others. This is a necessary companion for those of us in a mixed denominational family/world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to apologetics, November 11, 2004
By

This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
As someone who returned to the Church after several years of denial, I found myself forced to defend my faith against erroneous accusations from some evangelical friends of mine. Unfortunately, I didn't know enough yet to really defend the Church, and I wasn't a good spokesman for the faith. However, after finding this book in the Church library, I learned a great deal about what the Church stands for and why it is worth defending properly. I've bought most of the books in the set now, and I've learned a great deal about how to defend the faith. I recommend this set of books to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Church, whether they be Catholic or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent "nuts and bolts" of our faith, November 17, 2002

This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
This is an excellent compact review of the most common topics discussed with our separated brethren. It also fills in the gaps for those of us who might need a refresher course in our beliefs.

This book is well presented, easy to read, simple yet informative and a must for anyone evangelizing our faith. I will be using this and the other five in the series for an apologetics class that I will facilitate at my church. Trust me, this booklet covers what took me years and dollars to find in many other resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-read for those interested in learning about Catholicism, February 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
The information contained in this booklet will prove to be a great asset to both cradle Catholics & converts alike, even to non-Catholics wanting to know more about the faith. Well-written and easy to read, the author gives several references to double and triple-check the information so you're sure he backs up everything he's saying! The reader is left with a clear understanding of some of the most misunderstood teachings of the Catholic Church - from the Real Presence in the Eucharist to Mary and the Saints to Papal authority. This book is a must-have for all Catholic home libraries.

Our weekly Bible study group used this last fall, and the question that repeated itself most often was "Why didn't we learn this growing up?" Highly recommended for continued formation and evangelization!!

5.0 out of 5 stars UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN THE FAITH MADE EASY, August 17, 2000
This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
This booklet is for everyone. From someone who knows little or nothing about his faith, to pastor John. It has so much content, yet it does not take long to read. Every Catholic should have one to defend their faith and to share with others the truth about Catholicism. Very useful even with bible studies. Profound truths made easy to read and understand. I bought a case!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written &largely Bible based!, August 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
This easy-to-read, bible-based text really shows the scriptural basis of many questions against the Catholic doctrines such as Mary mother of God, purgatory, prayer to the Saints, and Sacred Tradition, etc. This 40-page text was written in a very logical and well-referenced manner.

This book has not only inspired me to further my study into the biblical teachings on the Sacraments, but also faciliated my background knowledge on biblical discussion of Church doctrines with Christians of any denomination.

I am feeling truly blessed for my faith journey and starting to feel a greater urge to share this special gift from God with others. "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations..." (Mt 28:19)

May the peace of the Lord be with you always.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Start, June 25, 2006
This review is from: Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith (Paperback)
This book is a great start if you are interested in starting out as a Catholic apologist.
I own all of the series and the best thing about tese is that they each give you the information on a single topic.

You will not be an expert when you are done but you will have the tools you need to pursue each topic further if you wish to.
