5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent motivator for bird watching and nature appreciation
I bought "Beginning Birdwatcher's Book with 48 Stickers" for my 5-year-old great-niece, but after going through it, I decided to present it to the Science Olympiad scholar, my 11-year-old great-niece, the big sister. In fact, she told me just yesterday that she didn't think she would like bird study but now finds it "really interesting." This is a milestone from a child...

3.0 out of 5 stars Strange Assortment
This book is meant for young children to identify birds they might see. I think it has a very peculiar assortment of birds - some are very difficult to see: Bald Eagle? Peregrine Falcon? It would take a pretty amazing child to be able to see and identify an American Redstart! It would be much better to create regional editions so a child could hope to see more than a few...

I bought "Beginning Birdwatcher's Book with 48 Stickers" for my 5-year-old great-niece, but after going through it, I decided to present it to the Science Olympiad scholar, my 11-year-old great-niece, the big sister. In fact, she told me just yesterday that she didn't think she would like bird study but now finds it "really interesting." This is a milestone from a child whose own friends tell her she never shows wild emotion. (They just don't see her at home!)

You can see the concept made concrete on the cover (if you can see that clearly). Each of the 48 birds commonly found in backyards has a separate half-page (lengthwise) column that provides this information: a blank space for the sticker once the birder sights (sees?) the bird, its size, description of eggs, food, range, and a series of four lines on which the birder can record precise information about the sighting. Simple, easy, effective, and most significantly--memorable!

Oh, yes, I will order two more--one for the five-year-old and one for the great-aunt. After all, she, too, is a beginning birder! I think I'll throw in another for their brother, an already nature-lover. We mustn't have a family feud over bird watching!

Very good value for very little cost. Easy to follow instructions with sufficient bird information to make it educational as well as entertaining.

My 4 year old niece and her 8 year old sister were excited to start identifing birds in their neighborhood, and putting the stickers of those birds in the book. They were disapointed however, that there were no pigeon stickers, since pigeons are plentiful were they live.

Basically, this is a log for 48 birds. Kids put the stickers and date and place on the log page. I bought 3 of these for Kindergarteners who don't write, but there are the stickers.

Purchased these books for my neice and nephews. The stickers are accurate in color and will be a great learning tool. I plan to keep a copy available for when we have young guests. I believe it is important to teach children the importance of all creatures at an early age.

5.0 out of 5 stars We're ready for the next edition., May 26, 2010

I bought this book for my grandsons who really enjoy it. It's a simple format: identify the bird, put the sticker on the corresponding page, read about the bird then record where and when the bird was spotted.Kids can easily do this with minimal help from adults. That said, adults can learn from this book too.

The kids like this book so much but they are almost finished it. They''ve asked for the next edition. OK- Sy Barlowe we are waiting!

My son is really into brid watching. I bought this for him for Christmas and he has enjoyed writing in the book when he observes different birds. It is a book that I will keep and use in a scrap book since it has his writing in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for young "birders", May 16, 2011

This review is from: Beginning Birdwatcher's Book: With 48 Stickers (Dover Children's Activity Books) (Paperback)
I bought two of these books(to stay at my home in the country)for when my granddaughters visit. At 3 and 5 they are now able to identify most of the birds in the book. As they sit at my windows watching for birds at my feeders, if they identify the bird correctly, they get to put the sticker in the book and then we log together the date and time and where in the area the bird was seen. They love it! They have taken to looking for birds in their own backyard and at their other Grandma's cabin. We have big plans of doing the local nature center's owl walk one night this summer, as well as attempt to spotlight the owls that are roosting in our pine trees! How fun to get them excited about our feathered friends!

I bought a bunch of these to give to the kids in my Cub Scout (Bear) den. The books were a great way to introduce kids to birdwatching and the kids loved them. They went really well with our bird feeder building project. The only (minor) downside is that there are a lot of common birds that aren't in there and some of the birds that are in the book would be pretty tough for the kids to "capture".
