Book Description

1929986009 978-1929986002 January 1, 2000 Cdr
Despite the fact that they are spoken by millions of people, languages such as Korean or Turkish are not usually offered in schools or colleges. The Critical Languages Program (CLP) at the University of Arizona was created to meet the need for interactive instruction in these less-commonly-taught languages. In order to meet the needs of a wide variety of learners who wish to gain proficiency in some of these languages, CLP has developed a series of CD-ROM courseware beginning with Brazilian Portuguese, Cantonese, Kazakh, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, and Turkish. CD-ROMs for other less-commonly-taught languages are planned for the future. Each package contains two CD-ROMs with a total of twenty lessons for the beginning learner, consisting of video dialogues and readings by native speakers, thousands of audio recordings, graphics, and extensive notes. Handy browser features enable users to go back and review words and pronunciations and to access five types of exercises: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, audio flashcard, pronunciation, and listening dictation. These exercises enable users to test and improve their knowledge of each lesson. Learners with microphone-equipped computers can record and play back their own voices and then compare their pronunciation with that of the native speaker. With the click of a button, learners can hear native speakers pronounce words or phrases, facilitating quick comprehension of these challenging languages. Each package of two CD-ROMs contains the equivalent of a textbook and workbook with audio and video components, making it practical for either self-instruction or directed educational, governmental, and business purposes.

Works on Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7. For more information, visit the UA Critical Languages Web site at http://clp.arizona.edu/cls/

5.0 out of 5 stars I am always learning each time I repeat the course!, March 28, 2004
This review is from: Beginning Brazilian Portuguese (Critical Languages Series) (CD-ROM)
I wanted to learn Portuguese fast because my fiancee is a Brazilian. When I bought this Beginning Brazilian Portuguese, I had about 4 weeks before I visited my sweetheart. Two weeks before my trip to Brazil, I studied it and I concentrated just in the part where two instructors teach you in the form of a dialogue. My goal was to just get use to the portuguese sounds. I did a few of the excercises and to my surprise this basic level of study helped me understand my sweetheart when she spoke to me in Portuguese. I recognized some of the words and expressions. I realized that Beginning Brazilian Portuguese is a very practical language course. It does teach you the everyday Brazilian Portuguese words and phrases such as "nao é?" It also let's you in the culture. For instance, in my humble opinion there is no word for breakfast in Portuguese. They use "Café da Amanha." I kept asking my sweetheart how to say "breakfast" in portuguese and she did not understand me. When I came back and repeated the course for a second time, I learned about Cafe da Amanha. Yes, from the moment I studied this course I became captivated by it.

When I came back from Brazil to the USA, I have repeated this course about 4 times already. This course is very rich in the way that it has been put together. Personally, I would not be able to learn everything in one repeat. I learn bits by bits and I first just went through entire course because I wanted to get use to the Brazilian Portuguse sounds. When I came back I studied the multiple questions and paid attention based on my experience in Brazil and learn more words. I repeated it and took dictaction and listen to a couple of songs in the course. Finally, I am still studying it and learning the grammar. Guess what? I never dreamed that I would write Portuguese. I am successfully writing letters in Portuguese to my fiancee and she understands me well. I am beginning to speak it. And all of this because I keep repeating the course: Beginning Brazilian Portuguese.

The whole point: Beginning Brazilian Portuguese is a fantastic course put together. With patience you can acquire a very strong base in the Portuguese language from the Brazilian Portuguse course. (Why not Portuguese in general!) We humans are not recorders and so we cannot learn a language in 10 days but with work and effort one can learn a language in a few months. I am happy with this course and will keep on studying it and will end up with a very strong foundation. I am going back to Brazil in July and will test again my Beginning Brazilian Portuguese.

Have fun! Vem vindo ao Brazil!
