Life is too short to suffer books like this,
By A Customer
This review is from: In the Beginning (Hardcover)
Praised by former teaching colleague, Roddy Doyle who is either a gentleman or has no taste, this book, like its heroine deserves to be returned to the shelf. It is impossible to suspend disbelief and accept that such an unsympathetic heroine like Rose could exist in Ireland. She is a wimp and a whinger and this book is a 300 page yawn. You don't deserve this book. This book doesn't deserve you.

One of the top ten books I've read this year.,
By A Customer
This review is from: In the Beginning (Paperback)
This is a brilliant story of a middle age woman whose husband of 20 years decides he doesn't love her any more and leaves her. Page by page you see Rose emerging from her shattered marriage growing stronger and wiser. Beautifully written. I hope we hear from this author again.

A succinctly written story about the end of a marriage,
By Susan Connor (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In the Beginning (Paperback)
Catherine Dunne's first novel introduces us to Rose, a wife and mother for twenty years, whose husband has left her. The story moves quickly, and presents the beginning, middle, and end of the marriage, as well as the beginning of a new life for Rose and her children, in a carelfully crafted dance of words. In one chapter we are with Rose as she is now, the next reflects a time in her past. This new writer lets us into Rose's journey as she looks for the strength she never knew she had, and revels in the fact that she never knew she needed it! I couldn't put this book down, and Ms. Dunne is adept at looking at slices of life, letting her characters live it, and letting us get to know them in the process.,
