Editorial Reviews

From the Actor

*What kind of drum set & accessories do I need to get started? Answer: You don’t actually need any drums at all. Paul shows you how to set up cardboard boxes to practice on, so all you have to buy is a pair of drum sticks. When you’re ready for a real drum set, any beginning set will do fine. (new or used) Most companies make small sets for kids. You need: a kick drum (bass drum), snare drum, high hat (symbol), ride symbol, a small tom tom (no floor tom necessary) & a pair of drum sticks. *What am I really getting myself into if I think I’d like to try the drums? Answer: You have to learn to do 3 slightly different things at the same time. Your right hand is doing one thing, your left is doing another, while your foot is doing another. The good news is that Paul has taken all the tedium out of this "juggling" act, by giving your the symbol first, adding bass drum next (then letting you practice those together till you get comfortable, then (& only then) adding! the snare drum to the first two things. Your television screen is split into 4 quadrants, (as shown above) allowing you to see what’s going on with each piece at all times. So easy! No tedium!

About the Actor

Paul Murski is one of Austin Texas' most "in-demand" drummers. In his 20's he made his living as a full time professional drummer in rock & country bands. Today Paul is the senior engineer for "Horizon Film & Video" where he films & edits all of the projects for Musicianís Workshop & a host of other professional clients. On the weekends Paul plays with his dance band & helps students to learn popular drum styles. Since Paul is both the drummer & videographer, he has both the teaching vision & the technical skills that allowed him to create the world's greatest beginning video drum lesson!

3.0 out of 5 stars good but incomplete for beginners, January 27, 2007
By
This review is from: Beginning Drums the Fun Approach (DVD)
Shows the basic beats for different musical styles in a very simple straightforward manner. Does this very nicely. Does not go over any technique or form which is critical! For example, if you're banging from the elbows instead of the wrists you're going to develop problems. That's why only 3 stars. Goes great in combination with the DVD by Tommy Igoe - Getting Started On Drums which does go over basic technique for beginners. I rate that one 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and fun - just what drums should be!, March 14, 2006
By
This review is from: Beginning Drums the Fun Approach (DVD)
Grab some sticks and cardboard boxes, the whole family will have a blast, tapping along to Paul Murski's light and amusing approach to learning basic drums. All of the basic beats are covered here, including rock, 3/4 and country. And it's all in a conversational fashion that is not condescending or pushy. The split screen style allows you to easily see what each limb is supposed to be doing. His tips are helpful, and he even gets his sons involved. There's a surprise lesson at the end as a bonus involving one of our favorite genre's - surf. We don't want to work, we just want to bang on the drum all day. Thanks, Paul!

This is actually one of the first things i got when i first started playing. and its great! It really teaches you a lot easilly and straight to the point. This dvd teaches you how to play the basic beats to all kinds of music ranging from 50's rock to punk to reggae to even swing! and at the end it even has a suprise drum thing for you to learn and also towards the very end explains how to even use cardboard boxes and even your hands and legs to play the drums. even if you are just thinking about getting a drumset its still worth getting.
