Great Book!,

This review is from: Beginning Electric Bass (Book & Cd) (Complete Electric Bass Method) (Paperback)
Am I glad I got this book! I found this book to be one of the more, if not the most informative beginning electric bass book I have ever seen. Though it is probably designed for the bassist whom can already play a few notes, the book opens many doors for any beginner bassist. The major tetrachords chapter shows how to play a one- octave major scale in as many as 9 ways. The book teaches musical concepts and how they apply to the bass. In a well-written format this book doesn't just show you a scale or chord and move on, but rather it not only presents material, but also explains and demonstrates how it is used to create bass lines in a real world bass playing situation. If you want to be a creative bassist and eventually be able to create your own bass lines, this beginning book is where to start. Not only do you learn some great bass lines, but also you begin to understand how to create your own by learning about rhythm, triads, 7th chords, diatonic harmony, blues, funk, rock, common chord progressions and much more. I can't wait to get the Intermediate book of this series. 5 stars all the way!

this book was specifically requested by my sons Bass teacher. My son enjoys having the CD to play along with at home during practice time. I highly reccomend it to anyone taking lessons or needing a book to get started playing the bass on your own.

This book is not just puff but has real musical information and shows you how to use it to create bass lines with. Great Stuff! I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn about the bass. Because the information is explained clearly this is a great book for someone to work through it on their own but it is also a great tool for teachers to use with their students. 5 Stars for this book! The DVD that is available with it is great but I am also getting the CD.

This is an awesome book! It is definitely the best book I have seenfor any beginning bassist who can play a few notes. This book is not a note reading book, Dave has other books serving that purpose. This book does a great job in teaching the beginning bassist the tools used to create bass lines and shows in a stepwise fashion how to do show. He also goes beyond the standard perspective of playing major scales. Instead of showing just one, two or three fingerings, the books shows a way to come up with nine different one octave fingerings, and shows multiple fingerings for triads and 7th chords. I think this is great for beginning bassists who really wants to explore the instrument and become a creative bassist. You also learn about diatonic harmony, commonly used chord progressions, triads, 7th chords, how to use all of these to create bass lines in the styles of rock, blues, funk reggae and more. I have seen many beginning books but this one is an original. I remember seeing a very good review of this book as well as Dave's Intermediate and Mastering books in Bass Player Magazine a couple of years ago. This gets my highest recommendation.

Not really a good beginner's book,

The book is packed with useful information. However, I simply don't find it that useful for learning how to play the electric bass.Hi, here's a bass, here's how you hold your hand. And now... here's a major tetrachord (what!?). Here's how to play these up and down the neck of the bass. Go have FUN with that! Rrriiiight. . . I prefer the FastTrack book maybe I'm just not sharp enough to really grok what Beginning Electric Bass teaches. If you already have a guitar background, I'm sure this book would make absolute 100% sense to you. |
