4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty well written...flow teaches not preaches, December 20, 2004

Okay, so Fedora is at rev 3 now. I have found that 95% of the time the instructions are the same for the GUI picks, and more so obviously for command line. Speaking of which, it is very helpful that the book simultaneously explains GUI commands and picks while also explaing in detail how the do the same via command line interface. You can learn both or either by themself. Also, it is a good reading man. By that I mean the flow of information starts general, and gradually gets deeper in complexity, building sort of. It is meant to read through while you are sitting in front of your box, typing in what they tell you and seeing the results. Hands on, I think the kids call it. After on hour or so, I was just command lining away. I also have the "dummy" book, but this one's more intelligent.

BTW, since the software is TOTALLY FREE for the downloadin', i don't care if the disc boots or not and neither should you. Buy the book, download the latest iso's from redhat's site, use the disc for a beer coaster.

OK. I am a neophite and what better book than this one. Or so it would seem until I tried to install the included DVD which contains Fedora Core 2 Linux. Insert the DVD and reboot then the get the intro screen asking if you want a graphical or textual install. I selected graphical and it started then rebooted the PC. I tried this several times. The PC I am using is based on a VIA EPIA Eden CPU motherboard and Fedora Core 1 installs just fine.
