Book Description

1590597923 978-1590597927 February 26, 2007 1

JBoss Seam represents the primary counter to the hot and successful Spring Framework and perhaps even Ruby on Rails framework. The open source lightweight Java EE 5 standards based JBoss Seam framework is a part of this second wave of open source lightweight Java that’s taking place.

Beginning JBoss Seam: From Novice to Professional aims to take advantage of this hot area, and aims to be first beginning book and one of maybe two books to market in this likely lucrative area.

This book gives an overview of Seam related JSF and EJB 3 as found in Java EE 5; provides information on the tools to make development with Seam easier as well as a functioning in depth demo to truly learn how to use Seam; and gives tips and tricks to using Seam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Seam as well as EJB3/JSF, April 8, 2007

This review is from: Beginning JBoss Seam: From Novice to Professional (Paperback)
This book does a great job of introducing the reader to the relevant pieces of EJB3 and JSF that Seam builds upon, and then goes through the various ways you can use Seam. The examples are thorough yet built up slowly; he doesn't skip any steps which is often the case with books on frameworks. I read the book cover to cover and was off and running with Seam, and still from time to time look back on it for details on a specific topic.

It focuses on the core Seam benefits like the annotation framework and persistence contexts, but also covers more advanced topics like Security, AJAX and Rules integration.

Highly recommended...

1.0 out of 5 stars Low quality writing, June 29, 2007
By
This review is from: Beginning JBoss Seam: From Novice to Professional (Paperback)
I have to admit that I do not write reviews, but this book compelled me to do so. I have read a fair share of computer books in the last fifteen or so years, I'd have to say that this book is one of the worst. Luckily for me, I was familiar with most of the concepts described in it, otherwise, I would be quite lost. This book is on Seam, but the first 100 or so pages are on other technologies. This might be good for some, but I expected to get a Seam book. The number of errors, typos and omissions in this book are innumerable. English is horrible too (has an editor actually read it?). Good percentage of sentences start with "So....". Code examples sometimes list imported classes, and sometimes don't. This makes it very hard to understand where these classes/interfaces/annotations come from. The book is full of statements without a logical path to them. The title says: "From Novice to Professional". Well, this is a bold statement and the the book does not hold up to it. I certainly would not recommend it to a novice, as Seam concepts are not explained well, and would not recommend it to a professional, because it just does not provide answers and does not go deep enough for those trying to dig the Seam. The explanation of a SLSB life cycle and other EJB3 concepts are unintelligible. The only positive thing about this book was time on the market, but as I have read the Michael Yuan's "JBoss Seam" book, online documentation and EJB 3 specification, I'd say that this book was completely useless for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taught me a great deal, May 3, 2007
This review is from: Beginning JBoss Seam: From Novice to Professional (Paperback)
I learned a great deal from this book. I read it cover to cover. I'll save it for reference and configuration issues.

The first part of the book reviewed JSF and EJB3 and established their relationship to Seam. Since I'm new to those technologies, that really helped me too.

The book is easy to read and was very well written and edited. Congratulations to the author and to the editors.
