Great beginner's book, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Beginning Karate (Japanese Arts) (Paperback)
I got this book years ago, before I ever formally studied martial arts. It lays out the basics clearly in photographs, pointing out common mistakes. It stresses form of technique, which is just what a beginner needs. After practicing with nothing more than this book (because it really does come down to practice), when I finally did start studying in a school, instructors would ask me, "You really never studied before?"
And don't let the title dissuade you. It's Karate based, but the material it covers: bowing, blocks, punches, kicks, etc, are fundamental to all martial arts. What you learn from this book can be applied to any style, and after years of training, the material is as fresh and relevant as ever.
