1) This DVD is for real beginners to mandolin; if you've been playing for a bit already, you probably don't need it. But if you're starting from scratch, this is a great resource.

2) Do not buy this DVD alone! It belongs with a book that shares the same author and title, which is the first volume of a very thorough and detailed mandolin method, The Complete Mandolin Method, from Alfred Publishing and National Guitar Workshop.
The three volumes are named Beginning Mandolin (this is the one that this CD goes along with), Intermediate Mandolin, and Mastering Mandolin.

If you like to save money, you can get a single large tome containing all three volumes of this method in a single volume called the "Complete Edition". However, the whole method is called the *Complete* Mandolin Method, so every volume has the word "Complete", which makes it hard to search out the one you need.

It took me a really long time to figure out the various volumes, CDs, DVDs, etc. of this series (and other similar series by the same publishers). And along the way I ended up buying things I didn't need, which I'm not thrilled about. So I wrote this hoping to clarify for others.

A final detail: The CD that comes with the Complete Edition has MP3s of all the music in all three volumes, unlike the CDs that come with the individual volumes, which are ordinary old fashioned CDs (*not* MP3).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book September 1, 2008
I found this book very helpfull for me s a beginner who decided to learn how to play Mandolin. the TAB note are amazing features that are presented nicly in a simple way. If you do not know how to read the note, do not worry this book will get you there.I f you are an advanced learner, look for a book that is more advanced. Would I recommend it to a freind of mine! Yes. Target Audience: Some body with little or no knowlege about Mandoline or note reading. Try this book It will save you lots of hours d money if you are planning to start a new hobby.
What i did not like is the front page picture; I do not know why he decided to stand beside a rusty old railroad tract.

The CD is a great help, the sound is clear, no mistakes and without it the book would be very dry and difficult.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for total beginners June 11, 2008
By Nick
The only audience for this DVD is for those who have no familiarity with stringed instruments at all. It is very slow and methodical and never really goes very far. As a guitar player, I spent 10 minutes on this and benched it.

I was going to give this a higher rating on the basis that its audience is supposed to be beginners, but it keeps referring to the book which is a separate purchase. It does not even come with any tab. I have not seen the book, but that may be a better buy as the previous reviewer mentioned.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy the CD version instead May 2, 2008
The book is good, but works better with the CD rather than the DVD. There is little value added in the DVD.

The book is a good introduction to the mandolin and has a variety of musical selections in different styles. THe book has tablature as well as standard music notation.

The CD version is better than the DVD version as the CD selections can be easily loaded on your computer and played back at will. Buy the CD version instead.
