4.0 out of 5 stars The Origins Of An Incredible Band, October 3, 2007
This recent re-release compilation of Nile's two earliest recordings, "Festivals Of Atonement" and "Ramses, Bringer Of War" proves that this band has always been something special in a crowded metal scene. "Festivals" in particular, is just as eerie and crushing as anything they have done since, and is worth picking up just for "The Black Hand Of Set", "Divine Intent" and "Wrought", but the addition of the rest is even better. My only complaint is that about halfway through the kick drum seems to be suddenly very "clicky" and obtrusive, indicating that the production of these early discs was not quite as good as subsequent Nile releases....but any Nile fan should check this out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Nile EPs!, August 14, 2008
In the Beginning is a compilation of Nile's first two EPs reissued together on one disc. I was very excited to hear what Nile sounded like before Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka. I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. I was most surprised by the production, for an fledgling Brutal Death Metal band the sound quality was very good. You could understand very clearly what Karl Sanders and Chief Spires were growling. The guitars are handled by Karl Sanders on the Festivals of Atonement EP and by Karl Sanders and John Ehlers on the Ramses Bringer of War EP. They are, of course, very fast and technical on both EPs. You can hear them very clearly. The drums are handled by Pete Hammoura on both EPs and are what you can expect if you've heard Nile before, very fast with blast beats and pummeling double bass. Although the drumming would get better on records to come. There are some songs on here that would go on to Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka and some that you would only hear on this compilation. My favorites are Divine Intent, Black Hand of Set, Wrought, Howling of the Jinn, and Ramses Bringer of War. This is a great compilation, but only if you're already into Nile and have some of the other material. Get it though if you already like them.
