4.0 out of 5 stars The lost Nile Album, April 21, 2003
This review is from: In the Beginning (Audio CD)
While it is for their other three albums that Nile have received large quantities of praise, this album is also worth a look.
It's the first five songs that are of most interest as the final three are merely early versions of Nephren-Ka songs. They stand out from Nile's other work in that they are far more melodic and crunchy with Nile's current high speed style only popping up here and there. The album certainly has an epic, progressive feel to it, and is full of twists and turns. "Wrought" and "Godless" are two of the highlights on here and actually demonstrate some of the most integrated moments of classical-egyptian and death metal styles in Nile's discograhy.
I would highly recommend this album to Nile fans and in general fans of slower paced death metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Origins Of An Incredible Band, October 3, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In the Beginning (Audio CD)
This recent re-release compilation of Nile's two earliest recordings, "Festivals Of Atonement" and "Ramses, Bringer Of War" proves that this band has always been something special in a crowded metal scene. "Festivals" in particular, is just as eerie and crushing as anything they have done since, and is worth picking up just for "The Black Hand Of Set", "Divine Intent" and "Wrought", but the addition of the rest is even better. My only complaint is that about halfway through the kick drum seems to be suddenly very "clicky" and obtrusive, indicating that the production of these early discs was not quite as good as subsequent Nile releases....but any Nile fan should check this out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite BSoV or Catacombs but vintage Nile all the same, April 11, 2001
This review is from: In the Beginning (Audio CD)
Following the release of 1997's Catacombs and 2000's Black Seeds of Vengeance, I had often wondered what the earlier material would sound like. Would it be less mature, or would it lack the Egyptian element thats made them so well known in the death metal community? I was thrilled to see Nile release this album, a combination of their two early EPs, Festivals of Atonement, recorded circa 1995, and Ramses Bringer of War, a 1997 release. Thankfully, they still had their own sound, still using the Egyptian instrumentation and history as sources for lyrics. The recording quality is pretty bad on the first 5 tracks, which can be understood since this is their first EP release. Despite poor production, one can hear the roots geared in the tracks for the current greatness of such a band. The production picks up on the last 4 tracks, which are amazing! It is also interesting to hear how the boys did without Dallas on the guitar-I think he only made them much more brutal! All in all, a great way for Nile to honor fans by giving them a chance to get the old albums again, and a wonderful way to hear the beginning of death metal's newest triumph.

After becoming overwhelmingly intrigued by Nile with Black Seeds and Catacombs, I had to know where this was coming from progressively so I have bought and studied Niles albums in chronological order. ITB is definitely more droning and chugging than the following works (a few re-recorded tracks share with Catacombs) but helped me comprehend the later works well. I love all the Nile albums, but do not see their earlier works as sub par at all, as can some times be the case. it's slower on average but there is really good stuff here for any NIle fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw and brutal, August 24, 2005
This review is from: In the Beginning (Audio CD)
The lost Nile album. Well, what I can say? In comparison to the ¨real¨albums this one sounds raw, powerful, brutal. Production is not the best but the songs, the ferocity and the violence of the music are more valuable than a perfect mix. Include three previous version of songs released in ¨Among the Catacombs of Nephren Kha¨

I was completely blown away by this one. I'd say it's there second best. The lyrics aren't nasty or anything, but who cares it's the musicianship you must hear! IT'S SO FAST AND FURIOUS AND IS ONE OF THE HEAVIEST BANDS IN EXISTENCE!!! This is TRUE deathmetal! Love it. Fans of Nile should also check out Origin as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Demo Compilation For Nile Fans Who Want the Rarities., August 27, 2010
This review is from: In the Beginning (Audio CD)
People in the underground metal and extreme metal community best know death metal band Nile as one of today's key death metal bands. Nile's sound can be described as technical and brutal yet ambient at times due to the lyrics ancient Egyptian ideology and music. The band released three demos, six full-length albums, and two compilations so far. One compilation is composed of the last two demos.

Nile's In the Beginning contains songs from the demos Festivals of Atonement and Ramses Bringer of War. Festivals of Atonement has more of a death-thrash sound and the vocals are cleaner. The demo contains songs "Divine Intent", "The Black Hand of Set", "Wrought", "Immortality Through Art", "Godless", and "Extinct". Ramses Bringer of War is a full transition into technical/brutal death metal and the three songs appeared on the first full-length Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka as studio versions. The songs are "Howling of the Jinn", "Ramses Bringer of War", and "Die Rache Lied Der Assyriche".

Those who are fans of Nile may want to add this to their discography because these are rarities from Nile.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is superior., January 23, 2007

to many things available. I can't stress the excellence enough. To the kid at heart, this is everything. The stupendous "The Howling of the Jinn" is a not so similar (it's an exact copy save offbeat) of "Mars:Bringer of War" by Gustav HolSt.It is too excellent and killer. It must be seen that the Chicago Symphony compliments this. It's first Violnist years ago gave up his position to follow his heart in Viola: Rising again to first section. Thanks Mr. Ferrin for 39 years of great music. Just like Nile, the Chicago Symphony led by James Levine gives "Mars:Bringer of War" the majestiC vibrato and flat tones and only Berliotz's "Witches Sabbath" by Solti (But Nile's sacred..This must be seen..) anD the Chicago Symphony comparES..Death comes alive.
