This review is from: Beginning Russian (Paperback)
I am really disappointed with this new edition of Beginning Russian. I needed it because I had a copy of the first edition from the library and had ordered the CDs from Cornell University to match. The CDs (which are excellent and amazingly extensive and good value) didn't match the old edition of the book, so I ordered the new book, thinking it would be roughly the same. Unfortunately, it is totally different. In the old edition, the graded conversations followed a story and kept me committed to continuing. In this new edition, the graded conversations are totally random. I don't care about the characters in them, as I don't get to know them. I know nothing about them. They have no substance, and I'm bored. I bought this book because I don't have a regular teacher or class to attend where I live, so I need the book to be very engaging, which the first edition WAS! This new "improved" edition is a great disappointment.
