As a smart phone novice, I was looking for instruction in the area of iphone apps and Mr. Hirwani's Introduction to jQTouch is just fabulous!

His use of a series of small applications to explain different themes, the addition of panels and highlighting of information, tips for obtaining and displaying user information, etc. provides enough introductory knowledge to easily work with jQTouch. I especially liked the way, the sample Book Store web application is created step by step.

The creation of server side and client side database tables is nicely covered and accompanied with running PHP scripts. The use of these scripts for every step is quite helpful in understanding the topic(s).

Additionally, the list of different functions for accessing MySQL from PHP is very informative and greatly assists in understanding the code of the application.

AJAX technique is used for accessing information from server side database table to make the web application quite responsive.

Thanks to Introduction to jQTouch, I am now confident enough to create my own web application for Smartphones.

This book would definitely be useful if the author provided a link to download the code. It is based on developing a bookstore complete with a detailed mysql database and appears to be a great guide to integrating php, mysql server data, client side data, javascript and jqtouch all within one publication. It may be useful in a classroom environment where typing in over 25 pages of code over a full semester may be of educational benefit to students, but I found it useless without the code required to run the scripts. I emailed the author requesting access to an online source for the code. If this isn't available I will return the book to Amazon. All the code is provided in one location - Appendix C - from page 172 to page195 of continuous uninterrupted code! If I am mistaken and the code is available somewhere, I will update this review.

A good introduction to the topic, a shame that there is no software copy of the examples available on the web. The book has complete source code listings, but is a throw-back to the good old days of the 1980's when you had to key in source code from magazines.

On the Ajax topic this book suffers (like many others) in that it presents ajax examples that assume the call works, i.e. there is no error trapping to handle failed call. Which can happen during learning/development of an application.

i must change my point of view, i was very frustrated about the book but i was in the 100th review of trying to find what was happening, then i notice an abnormal behavior of the app, sometimes it worked, sometimes no, i erased history, cookies, etc but was with this particular behavior. Then I think God focused me that something was wrong with the apache web server because the database connections were ok, the data was on the mysql server, so what was happening?. The problem was that this app was confusing with other php's because i made several copies in different folders of the same app for testing changes, but was really the problem. An advice. if you are planning to make different versions be careful of deleting everything on your web server before running again or the app could get lost with similar stuff in the Apache cache i guess.

Sorry for my last review, i was really upset.

BUY THE BOOK IS THE ONLY ONE THAT GROUP ALL THIS TECHNOLOGIES FOR APPS OF THE REAL WORLD, BUT GET PATIENCE :)
