2.0 out of 5 stars Great voice, disappointing style
I'm a big fan of Mr. Derricks. After hearing him in "Dreamgirls," I recognized his voice when I recently saw "The Full Monty." I was delighted to learn he had released a CD. With the many positive reviews, I eagerly anticipated listening.

Unfortunately, this CD is very one-dimensional. There is very little up-tempo/energetic singing from Mr...

5.0 out of 5 stars The root of R&B..., February 24, 2000
This review is from: Beginnings (Audio CD)
I consider myself an R&B afficiando, have for as many years as I can remember--of late however, I feel that R&B has become too heavy laden in it's slow sex groove to pay attention to anything else. R&B has always been the original american dance music, something that Cleavant has brought back to the fold. His marvelous mix of 80's soul with a pinch of the 90's, is a welcome mix to the lathargic state of R&B today. His ballands aren't heavy with the synchopated beats of a lot of current music --they're actually real ballads. I was incredibly impressed with the quality of his voice, only having heard samples of his chords from the tv show Sliders. His writing along with his composing is top notch also coupled with incredibly professional production elements. Cleavant wrote and composed most of the songs on the cd as well as being executive producer along with his wife Portia, which by musical standards is considered quite an accomplishment. I thoruoghly enjoyed this cd and plan on spreading the word of Cleavant.

5.0 out of 5 stars An actor's musician's actor......a great human being, June 15, 2001
This review is from: Beginnings (Audio CD)
As an actor, Mr. Derricks is a dedicated man who is definately dedicated to his fans on Sliders. As a musician, he is gifted beyond words. You are missing out on the beginnings, (pun intended) of a great musical career by the one and only Cleavant Derricks! A review of his Beginnings CD from CD:

1. Cruisin L.A. - Definitive road music for long car rides. A great "cruising" tune

2. Better Get off me - soul/rap/rock all in one. Fit for pretty much all tastes

3. Incident in a Pleasant Grove - Soul music.....you'd be surprised if you listen to this. A really catchy tune.

4. A Matter of Time - Soft music for slow dancing. A great love song.

5. Standing in the need of love - Great dance/love music ala soul train.

6. Missing You - Second love song with a slow beat. Great for couples.

7. Pain in the Walls - Hmm...hard to describe, but for pure emotion, he puts his all into this song. A nice tune.

8. Remmy's Slide - Purely for Sliders television fans. If you hear this one and you're not a fan of Sliders, you'll be caught in it anyway. An all around really great song.

9. She was the One - A love song like no other. Cleavant ends the cd with the best. As they say, saving the best for last.

Cleavant is a very emotional and dedicated professional that puts his all into his work. This is the beginning of a great musical career for the most dedicated actor/musician I believe exists today. Get in on the start of something special. Buy this cd from cd!

4.0 out of 5 stars I was really surprised at how good this was., December 27, 2000

Really, I read the reviews and like some people I am a fan of Sliders. So I bought this thinking the the fans were just playing it up. But I have to admit that this CD is really incredible. He can really sing. He's a hundred times better on this CD than the sappy performances he gave on the Sliders show which while not bad, weren't great.

The one thing I don't understand is how come he isn't a mega super star singer after putting this work out. Seriously, I'm really amazed he didn't hit it big with this work and I look forward to his future works.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Masterpiece!, February 6, 2000

Cleavant Derricks excells at delivering a song. His musical compositions are complimented by his rich, colorful vocals on "Beginnings." If you are a fan of variety and original music, then this CD is for you. From the driven, bluesy song "Cruisin' LA," to the riveting, tear-jerking melody of "A Matter Of Time," this CD will bring you pleasure, sadness, and a touch of something only a great performer such as Cleavant can deliver. My advice: GET THIS CD! You will not be disappointed.

When I got this CD directly from the source, I was very happy (that I got it for free)... and after listening to it, I'm willing to pay about 3 times the normal cost. Cleavant has an awesome voice, and it's put to its full potential with this CD (and I ain't just saying this because I'm a diehard fan of Sliders). I really hope to see more albums from CD in the coming years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great in "Sliders"---Great in his CD!, July 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Beginnings (Audio CD)
From the first time I saw "Sliders" I was HOOKED--and looked forward to each and every episode with anticipation and joy. My two favorite characters were Arturo and Rembrandt "Crying Man" Brown of the Spinning Tops--he could sing and PLUS he looked handsome and proved to be very classy as the show progressed. If you are a fan of great MUSIC then this CD is for you. Though I'm probably buying it more for Rembrandt's memory than I am for Mr. Derricks, I still think that the "Crying Man"/Cleavant Derricks can sing VERY WELL and has a GREAT voice! "Kind of" reminds one of Brian McKnight, except I've grown to appreciate Cleavant Derrick's style more than Mr. McKnights. Go Remmy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased!, March 22, 2000
This review is from: Beginnings (Audio CD)
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE CD! I'm unable to tell whether it is his lyrics, his presentation or his voice that lends such a romantic air to his music...but it is definitely enchanting. Occasionally we Sliders fans were given the opportunity to hear Mr. Derricks sing on the show, but after listening to his CD it is very clear that we should have heard much, much MORE! Since I received this CD...I haven't heard anything on the radio or anywhere else that could compare with the quality this CD contains. I am VERY, VERY pleased! This CD is a true MUST for all music lovers.

The CD is awesome, and I didn't see "I'm a little teapot" or "The ABC's" on this CD. Just what did "Nursery School" mean by that? The lyrics are anything but!

"Beginnings" by Cleavant Derricks is a work of art, and there is not one song on this album that I don't like. Cleavant is a class act, a great guy, and a truly talented musician. I look forward to more from him!
