This review is from: The Beginnings of German Literature: Comparative and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Old High German (Studies in German Literature Linguistics and Culture) (Hardcover)
The Beginnings Of German Literature: Comparative And Interdisciplinary Approaches To Old High German by Cyril Edwards (Lecturer in German at St. Peter's College, Oxford and an Honorary Research Fellow of University College, London) is a meticulous and scholarly survey of the origins of German literature. Seven main essays study the earliest surviving German texts, the beginnings of German lyric, and specific works such as the Merseburg Charms. A college-level scrutiny given to fine detail, exhaustive research enhanced with extensive annotation. Black-and-white photographs show images of surviving medieval texts. No academic reference collection in Germanic Studies in general, and German Literature in particular, can be considered complete (or even adequate) without the inclusion of Cyril Edwards' The Beginnings Of German Literature.
