About the Author

With over seven and a half million copies of his books in print and seventeen titles on the New York Times bestseller list, David Weber is the science fiction publishing phenomenon of the new millennium. In the hugely popular Honor Harrington series, the spirit of C.S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander lives on–into the galactic future. Books in the Honor Harrington and Honoverse series have appeared on fourteen best seller lists, including those of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA Today. While Weber is best known for his spirited, modern-minded space operas, he is also the creator of the Oath of Swords fantasy series and the Dahak science fiction saga. Weber has also engaged in a steady stream of bestselling collaborations, including his Starfire series with Steve White, which produced the New York Times bestseller The Shiva Option among others. Weber’s collaboration with alternate history master Eric Flint led to the bestselling 1634: The Baltic War, and his planetary adventure novels with military science fiction ace and multiple national best-seller John Ringo includes the blockbusters March to the Stars and We Few. Finally, Weber’s teaming with Linda Evans produced the bestselling Multiverse series. David Weber makes his home in South Carolina with his wife and children.

Five fun stories.

Gannon's "By the Book" opens with young lieutenant Lee Strong leading a rescue for a ship captured by space pirates. After the gripping opening action, the lieutenant plays detective in treacherous politics at the space station where he delivers the rescued ship. The story's ending was surprising but satisfying.

Zahn's "A Call to Arms" begins with a hiring interview for a mercenary admiral. The story then takes us to a Royal Manticoran Navy ship running simulated space battles. Some great space action.

Weber's "Beauty and the Beast" features newly promoted lieutenant Alfred Harrington pursuing a medical education on Beowulf where mutual attraction flares with fellow student Allison Chou. Villains strike, and the action gets tight. Great characters, plot, and insights into Honor's parents.

Weber's "Best Laid Plans" stars 12-year-old Honor Harrington and a tree cat.

"Obligated Service" by newbie author Presby features a midshipwoman from Grayson. Good character development and story.

There was no Table of Contents in this book. To aid navigation on the Kindle, I added my own bookmarks for each story by searching on author name: Gannon, Zahn, Weber and Presby.

I am sad to say that I fell for it again. Weber's name on a book lured me in. Usually, at least his short stories in these compilations are worth reading and he had two of the four in the book. Those are good odds!
Unfortunately, Weber is the real problem in this book. His work is the worst part of Beginnings and that's what makes me sad. Let's go through each of the stories and review them.

By The Book by Charles E. Gannon-
This short story tries to be a classic sci-fi mystery story. It harkens back to many of the short stories I enjoyed as a child with a classic tale where the protagonist is offered a mystery and has to solve it. Unfortunately, the ratio of actual action to exposition in this story is grossly weighted towards the exposition side. The mystery isn't solved by investigation. The reader will discover that all the clues needed to solve the interesting mystery are carefully hidden by never being revealed to the reader until the protagonist solves the crime and explains all of his off-camera discoveries to the culprit. The whole thing has three scenes that I can recall total where the characters aren't just vomiting exposition at each other.
What I'm saying is that it's not a fun story to read. You get through it is the best I can say.

A Call to Arms by Timothy Zahn-
I haven't read anything by Timothy Zahn in years, but my lack of notice hasn't affected his writng skills at all. He's still top-notch. This story is actually pretty good. If you enjoyed the space battles of early Honor Harrington stories, this story is even earlier (MUCH earlier), and it's interesting to see how well this story integrates with the progression of technology and tactics from the Harrington stories.

Format: Hardcover
Beginnings (2013) is a SF anthology in the Honorverse series, following In Fire Forged. The initial volume in this sequence is More Than Honor. It contains five stories.

- "By the Book" by Charles E. Gannon is about an unusual Custom Patrol officer in a possible hostage situation. This tale occurs in 250 PD.

- "A Call to Arms" by Timothy Zahn recounts the role of a RMN junior officer during the Battle of Manticore. This story occurs in 1543 PD.

- "Beauty and the Beast" by David Weber brings RMN Lieutenant Alfred Harrington to Beowulf to attend medical school. This story occurs circa 1842 PD.

- "Best Laid Plans" by David Weber takes almost thirteen Honor out for a hike to Rock Aspen Creek, where she encounters treecats and Peak bears. This story occurs a few T-decades later than the previous tale.

- "Obligated Service" by Joelle Presby follows a Saganami graduate when she returns to Grayson. This story occurs circa 1921 PD.

These tales continue to provide backstory on the people within the Honorverse. It fills in the gaps from the first offworld colonies to the early years of Honor Harrington on Sphinx. It introduces new and less well known characters into the story.

Since there are a few millennia in that period and a solid base of readers, there will be other Honorverse anthologies. Meanwhile, the next Honorverse novel is Cauldron of Ghosts.

Highly recommended for Weber fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of space travel, future technology, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

I have enjoyed the Honor Harrington series, but sometimes the "short stories" or collections based in that universe with different authors have been a disappointment. Not this one. All of the stories are keepers, and I'm glad this one was available on Kindle early!

Format: Hardcover
The stories in the book in general are about the founding of the Star Kingdom of Manticore. The stories are are;
By The Book
A Call to Arms
Beauty and the Beast
Best Laid Plans
Obligated Service

By the Book is a story from Sol at or near the beginning of the Disapora from earth to systems. A Call To Arms is about the an attempt to control the Junction after some else decided they are important. Beauty And The Beast is about Honor Harrington's Parents. Best Laid Plans is about Honor's meeting with Nimitz, or if you prefer Dances on Clouds and Laughs Brightly. Obligated Service is about a young Grayson female officer's service at the time to the attack on Blackbird Base's shipyards and support equipment and staff.

I enjoyed the stories, and it gives a little more background on how things 'got to the point' of open war between the Star Kingdom and the SLN.
