I'm not a fan of giving out 5-star reviews usually.....but Begonias is a fabulous cd.
This is more of a Thad Cockrell album than a Caitlin Cary album. Thad takes the lead on most of the vocals, with Caitlin lending support. They sound wonderful together. The music itself is very engaging. This isn't the usual country-pop music, which is mainly played on the radio nowadays. Begonias sounds like it could have been recorded in the golden age of country, back in the 50's or 60's. It has a vintage feeling to it. Go buy this album and support great music. It's worth the full retail price. Begonias is about as authentic and as American as good music can be. One of my favorite records of the year.

I love this cd! It is beautifully written, played, sung and produced. It works as soothing background music, as well as it does in your earphones. Thad's voice is a high pitched world of hurt, Caitlin's is a warm heart. It doesn't seem like it would work, but it does, wonderfully, whether they are singing as a duet, background, harmony, whatever, they sound GREAT together. The production of Brad Jones is perfect-the musicians are excellent, and he doesn't get in their way. The vocals shine bright around the music, and they compliment each other in a way that is often missing on some recordings. There have been a lot of comparisons to the duets sung by George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Thad and Caitlin do not sound like George and Tammy, but their voices blend just as well together as George and Tammy's did, and these songs are exactly the type of songs they used to record. If you like the more traditional country sound of the '60's and '70's, do yourself a favor-buy this now, because you won't hear it on the radio or see a video on CMT, and I'd really hate for you to miss it. Highly Recommended!

As a rule I do not write product reviews, but this album demands to be the exception to that rule. If you are looking for honest, moving, life changing music, you must own this album.
I would buy this album again, even at twice the price. I have listened to it over and over, and have to say that from the first listen on, I have been unable to find a weak track. As my words cannot do justice to this wonderfull album, I will leave my review at that, but please, please do yourself a favor and buy it. You will not regret it!

For once, a true country record, no apologies.,

There are artists who partake in the tradition of country music, and artists who create and extend it. With the arrival of Thad Cockrell and Caitlin Cary's "Begonias", Nashville is undeniably confronted with the enduring talents of one of America's finest young songwriters(Cockrell) and the weathered and wise voice of a founding piece of country music in the last ten years(Carey). Following his critically acclaimed "Warmth & Beauty", an album only seeing it's true recognition oversees and within certain circles of respected industry figures, Thad Cockrell has set aside his stellar set of follow up songs, to pen these 11 tracks with former Whiskeytown songstress
Caitlin Cary. "Begonias" is steeped in the mystique and aura of it's timeless creators, it's origins (recorded and produced in Nashville by two Carolina transplants), it's session players (a striking list of Nashville veteransand Roman Candle drummer Logan Matheny), and it's primary purpose: an honest story told in song, track for track. Cockrell and Carey's voices contrast and join togethor, finding moments of striking harmony ("Please Break My Heart") and moments of stark contrast ("Two Different Things"). Moving from the contemporary grit of it's Whiskeytown and Wilco predeccesors, "2nd Option" provides the most obvious radio track, but is often rivaled by the equally catchy motown-like swagger of "Warm And Tender Love" or the Glenn Campbell beckoning "Something Less Than Something More". To be more specific, each song on "Begonias" vibrates with a classic sense of a song heard before, in the most classic sense, a song danced to, driven down a dark road to, or a song listened to drive away the thought of someone lost or far away. Where it mourns, it celebrates, where it intimates, it screams with life, and is a true success on all terms. With Yep Rock Record's May release of "Begonias", we find a perfect stop in the road for fans awaiting what comes next for these two artists; Cockrell about to record his most impressive list of tracks yet, and Carey continuing to structure how the 20-30 year olds of America hear their country music, and ease their aches and pains. Easily said, Cockrell and Carey have given us something direly lacking from country music in a long, long while; an earnest, timeless record that celebrates it's origins and aims towards it's future.

I don't expect this review to be 'helpful' as I've already read some very articulate descriptions of this work of art. If they haven't convinced you by now....please listen to this, ....please buy this.... chances are you will never regret it.

Now this, THIS is country,

This is probably the closest to a modern day incarnation of Gram and Emmylou you're gonna find. Not that this is, in any way, an imitation. It's the spirit they get right. There is nothing lacking in the execution, either. This is great set of tunes, sung simply and with great emotion. And perhaps most importantly of all, they get the swing in it, something you won't hear in your standard top 40 radio country pap...

A Beautiful Album,

I would buy this record for the pedal steel alone, but the songs are great, the singing is wonderful, Thad Cockrell's voice is the perfect match for Caitlan Cary. This record just has a great sound to it, it was recorded live in the studio and you can tell. A must have for fans of Whiskeytown. Too bad Nashville country does'nt sound like this anymore.

wonderful harmonies,

My husband heard snippets of this before it was out. He thought it would be something I'd like. He is more into country than I am but I love folk. This CD is the perfect combination of both. It is wonderful harmony combined with meaningful lyrics.

We saw these guys open for Eric Johnson, along with another opening act that included Katy Bowser & Julie Lee, also enjoyable. "Begonias" is great listening from beginning to end, Thad & Caitlin sound great together. Favorite tracks: Please Break My Heart, which has a pedal steel guitar so gorgeous it brings a tear to your eye; Warm & Tender Love, I haven't researched yet but I was stunned when they started and I finished singing every word with them to the end.
