Book Description

January 4, 1994
One of the funniest and most astutely observed works on the sexes since James Thurber, How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less Using the Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers (over 207,000 copies in print) turns the often-expressed axiom "Men are dogs" into a howling little handbook on men for contemporary women.

Doggie Dos and Don'ts: "Gentle strokes and playful petting techniques are positive motivational techniques for rewarding good behavior." And Flight and Chase Behavior: "If your dog is running away from you, the worst thing to do is chase after him . . . remain calm, act like you're having loads of fun without him, and soon he'll be trotting eagerly back." Doggie Dogmas: "Dogs like to eat out of your plate." "It's pointless to compete for the attention of a dog caught up in a ball game." And a quick primer on personality and temperament, from The Sporting Dog (requires daily exercise, gets bored easily, needs lots of attention) to The Hound (instinctually driven to chase and catch nearly anything that moves).

With its tongue-in-cheek humor and illustrations that evoke an old Esquire magazine, How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less assures that control will be yours forever, as behavioral problems vanish within twenty-one days. It's guaranteed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny? May 1, 2011

I bought this as a humorous gift for a bridal shower. However, after reading it, I didn't feel comfortable giving it as a gift. The drawings are cute but the advice is simplistic and a little demeaning to men and women. I get that it is supposed to be funny but it didn't hit the mark for me.

This book is simply mass market pandering to women. It's massively sexist and downright pathetic. If you replaced "Man" in the title, with "Woman", I can guarantee there would be a massive outrage by hypocritical feminists and a lot of women. You know what, maybe I will write a book like this, but about women. See how many jimmies I can rustle.

I read this book after reading an article in News week discussing the authors views on behavior modification for men. I do not write reviews, but I was very disappointed and upset while reading the damaging instructions that are given in this text. If you value yourself and the men in your life you will not perpetuate or endorse the outrageous thinking and behavior this book employed. I am ashamed of myself for purchasing the book. I thought surely it would be written in fun and not as a manual to alter a man's character. It should not need to be said, but I feel it needs to be, women should treat men with respect and value who they are and not change them. Woman who feel justified in manipulating men to act a certain way are controlling and devalue the relationships between men and woman. The instructions detailed in this text are irresponsible and demeaning to both genders. A man should be loved and celebrated for who he is and not be forced to change. If a woman is not happy with a man than she needs to leave the relationship and work on making herself happy. The only person any individual can change is themselves. It takes a lifetime to create yourself and work on behaviors, beliefs, and choices that need to be adjusted and revised to make yourself happy and healthy. Each person should focus on the work they need to do on themselves to be a better person instead of focusing on changing others. It is very narcissistic for any person to try to impose their will on another. No one needs to compromise who they are to satisfy anyone else. Everyone has the right to be who they are and choose to live the life they want that makes them happy.... Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep your man on a short leash June 29, 2000
Format:Hardcover
If you want a serious self help book to help you over a break up, this isn't it.

If you want to seriously laugh your hiney off, nab this book!

I got this book as a gift, after a particularly nasty break up had left me quite down in the dumps. I read it, and laughed myself silly!

With slick artwork, and smart and funny one liners, this book is a total joy for anyone who's had man problems. The comparisons of men to dogs is so uncanny it's truly funny.

My favorite? The bit where it quips: "if your dog runs away, do not chase after it, it will only make him run faster, instead, dangle a colorful plaything in his face, he will come running back". The illustration to this one liner is a woman dangling a colorful piece of lingerie in a man's face.

As I said, serious self help it's not, but you know what they say, laugher is the best medicine. Read this book, especially with a best girlfriend, laugh yourself silly, and cheer up.

Men are like buses, another will be by in fifteen minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars COME ON, GUYS (and gals), LIGHTEN UP! December 18, 2002
Format:Hardcover
This book is a wonderful dramatization of all that Mars/Venus, battle-of-the-sexes, alleged-hopelessness-of-relationships stuff. Read it, laugh, maybe get just a tiny bit more insight into this stuff, and whatever you do, don't take it too seriously. Ever heard of stand-up comedy? Well, this is a stand-up book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pathetic excuse for a book October 30, 2010
Format:Hardcover
You don't have go deeper that cover of this book to see how despicable author and ideas in this book are. Yes, it is a sad attempt at satire and humor, but certain things are offensive no matter in how colorful package you wrap them in.

I'm 110% sure that this book would suffer a terrible outcry and call for lynch if you would replace word "Men" with word "Women". Probably one of notable news anchors or show hosts ladies would spit all over book in prime time but since it is about men, that makes it okay, right? No, it doesn't.

This book and it's terrible attempt at humor (whatever) is not something to accept lightly. I think of myself as very openminded individual but this book just pushes that tolerance too far. This book shouldn't be burned - no, it should be buried deep - if nothing else, to use it as a fertilizer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unoriginal bordering on plagarism May 20, 2013
Format:Hardcover
This concept is a total rip off of the 1962 movie, "If a Man Answers" "http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056093/" If the ideas presented seem like something straight out of the 60's, that's because they are.
