Written to provide a comprehensive and practical foundation for assessing child and adolescent social-emotional behavior in a practical, scientific, and culturally appropriate manner, this book can be used as both a rigorous graduate-level training textbook and a practical reference book for practitioners and researchers.

Flyer-Specific Copy
Written primarily for students and practitioners in the fields of school psychology and child clinical psychology, it is also relevant to practitioners and researchers in related disciplines such as counseling, social work, child psychiatry, and special education.

Part I, Foundations and Methods of Assessment, includes eight foundational chapters that provide coverage of basic professional and ethical issues, classification and diagnostic problems, and comprehensive introductions to six primary assessment methods. Part II, Assessment of Specific Problems, Competencies, and Populations, includes six chapters that present applications for assessing specific social-emotional behavior domains. Together these two sections provide a comprehensive model of assessment that is practical, flexible, empirically sound, and sensitive to specific needs.

Among the more notable features of this exciting new text are the following:
* Problem-Solving Focus--Maintains an on-going focus on assessment as a problem-solving process.
* Methods and Instruments--Provides a detailed introduction to six primary assessment methods: behavioral observation, behavior rating scales, clinical interviewing, sociometric techniques, self-report instruments, and projective-expressive techniques.
* Technology--Provides state-of-the-art information on the latest developments in assessment technology for child and adolescent psychopathology.
* Empirical Focus--Maintains a focus on empirically-validated procedures that research has shown to have adequate validity and reliability.
* Intervention--Throughout the text, but especially in chapters 9-12, assessment is linked to intervention.
* Pedagogy--End-of-chapter case studies, reviews, and application questions provide opportunities to reflect on chapter content.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is currently the premier volume available on the behavioral, social, and emotional assessment of school-aged children and adolescents. Merrell includes a discussion of a wide range of personality measures, has not neglected ethical and legal considerations, and offers a well-reasoned conceptual analysis of the assessment process for child clinical and and school psychologists.
Psychology in the Schools

Praise for the first edition.
...well written and comprehensive. It presents important information related to the assessment of the behavioral, social, and emotional functioning of children and adolescents in a manner that is understandable to novices yet still valuable for experienced practitioners. One of the major strengths of the text is that it brings together in a single source a number of topics that were previously available only from separate references....an excellent training resource for graduate students and school personnel as well as a valuable reference for practitioners providing services to children and adolescents. The text provides a solid foundation of assessment while outlining the fundamentals of appropriate, empirically supported and defensible assessment practices. The author is to be commended for providing a valuable addition to the library of graduate students and school psychologists who provide assessment services to children of all ages.

Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment

Praise for the first edition.
Behavioral, Social, and Emotional Assessment of Children and Adolescents is an excellent resource for school psychologists and clinical child psychologists. Merrell's book is a comprehensive, readable, and practical guide that provides the clinician with up-to-date information on the use of objective methods for assessing personality. It is a must for anyone concerned with conducting empirically sound psychological evaluations--graduate students and experienced psychologists alike.

Praise for the first edition.
This is a superb resource for school, clinical, and pediatric psychologists. Written by a leader in the field of assessment, this book serves as a primary source for the appraisal of behavioral and emotional functioning among children and adolescents. The text does a superb job in covering a broad array of assessment techniques ranging from clinical interviewing to the assessment of preschool children....The work is a landmark contribution...
