Book Description

The classic BSAVA Manuals of Canine Behaviour and Feline Behaviour were ahead of their time in the appreciation of the importance of small animal behaviour and its problems and treatment. This completely new Manual builds on their success.

Written primarily for the veterinary surgeon in general practice, by veterinarians working in the fields of behaviour in different countries, the BSAVA Manual of Clinical and Feline Behavioural Medicine offers both sound scientific information and practical easy-to-follow advice. The book will also appeal to those who already have a special interest in behaviour problems.

Following a consideration of the place of behavioural medicine within the practice setting, the normal behaviours of cats and dogs are described. Some more theoretical chapters are included, to give a background understanding of learning theory, the physiology of fear, and types of aggression. But the major focus of the Manual is on the practical approach to history taking, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, and follow-up of the range of behavioural problems encountered in dogs and cats. Colour photographs and specially commissioned drawings illustrate important features such as body postures, and tables throughout help the reader to access important information quickly.

In the last 10-15 years the veterinary professional has increasingly appreciated the wider importance of animal behaviour and psychological well-being. Behavioural problems can disrupt the pet=owner relationship to the point of breaking, and many pets are re-homes, abandoned or euthanased as a result. Safeguarding the pet-owner relationship and assisting owners in gaining a deeper understanding of their companion animals is an integral part of modern veterinary practice. The BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioural Medicine will enable you to cater for this need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information for all Cat Owners, March 24, 2003

This review is from: BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioural Medicine (BSAVA British Small Animal Veterinary Association) (Paperback)
This book is a bit pricey but well worth it. It begins with overviews of normal cat behaviour and development, from birth onwards, and then moves to discussions of the causes of and how to handle behavioral problems (such as fear!). It is written for the veterinary professional but is not too difficult for the layman to understand. The chapters are each written by an international authority on that particular subject (such as Dr. Crowell-Davis of UGA who writes on "Social Organization, Communication, and Development in Cats"). I can't speak from the point of view of a dog enthusiast, but cat owners and breeders will find this volume both interesting and useful.
