5.0 out of 5 stars Wow., June 20, 2009
This review is from: Behind the Bit (Canterwood Crest #3) (Paperback)
I should start this by saying I am 16, and way too old to be reading these books. I bought TAKE THE REINS for something new to read, and once i started reading, I couldn't put it down. As far as middle-school age horse books go, these are top of the line. For a 16-year-old reading on a college level, I find them a bit too easy of a read, but that is to be expected. The stories are strong, good reads. For a girl (or guy, i don't know) that would want to read these however, it is worth noting that there is some "boy stuff" involved - nothing a parent should worry about at all, but if you don't like reading about boys, you may very well not like these books. However, this is good stuff - 99% of the time, the horse stuff is accurate (take that from a girl who shows on the A-circuit and has two Thoroughbred geldings), they've frequently caused me to laugh out loud, and every time I finish one I run to the bookstore immediately.
Great read, for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good series!, March 19, 2010
This review is from: Behind the Bit (Canterwood Crest #3) (Paperback)
I really love this series. It's about a girl named Sasha Silver who goes to a boarding school because it has a good equestrian program. In this particular book, Sasha is upset that her boyfriend won't talk to her because a mean girl named Heather lied and said they were together and her best friend Callie won't talk to her because she thinks Sasha is seeing the guy she has a crush on behind her back, and it doesn't make things better in this book since Sasha is always seen by Callie talking to or playing around with him. It's also break but Sasha, Heather, Callie and some more girls are staying on campus for a special horse training program and they are also being intitiated by an exclusive group on campus. It hurts Sasha to see that Callie is getting in with Heather's old friends, who are mad at her for stealing one of their boyfriends, therefore making Heather and Callie bond a little bit.
Like I said early I like this series, the only flaw I have with it is that the main character is too focused on boys, which isn't a bad thing but for a book aimed at older elemantary school girls, it's not the right message to deliver to them but other then that I love the series. It's a lot better then books like The Clique.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, January 6, 2011
This review is from: Behind the Bit (Canterwood Crest #3) (Paperback)
Sasha is in quite a predicament...friend and boy wise. Her BFF, Callie, thinks she's after her crush, Eric, but Sasha swears they are just friends. After all, she likes Jacob and wishes he was back at Canterwood Crest so they can talk about her outburst before he left.

Regardless, Callie won't talk to her, and that means Sasha really only has Eric and her horse, Charm, to turn to. In the process of trying to win back her friend, Sasha learns that mean girl Heather isn't all she appears to be, the older girls have a trick up their sleeve, and being in a clinic might be harder than she thought.

Jessica Burkhart has written a fun series that is sure to suck younger girls in! There is plenty of jealous yet realistic situations and actions. You get a wide variety of characters, from mean girls to mistaken mean girls and all the types in between. Everyone, for the most part, seems fleshed out and real, and Sasha is definitely one heroine to root for!

Eric is a swoon-worthy friend, ready and willing to do whatever he can to help another. He has his own feelings, though, and you'll definitely feel for him throughout the story, even when Sasha is too lost in her own problems to realize someone else's thoughts.

BEHIND THE BIT is just one book in the series, but it can stand alone quite well, and is sure to make readers most curious for the rest!

5.0 out of 5 stars A New World for Sasha, February 10, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Behind the Bit (Canterwood Crest #3) (Paperback)
Sasha has been dating Jacob, but after the Sweetheart Soiree, she isn't sure. Secretly her guy friend, Eric, has a crush on her, but he is respectful of her feelings and will not allow his feelings to ruin the Sasha-Jacob relationship. He is the type of guy every girl would like to have as a boy friend. He is respectful and kind. He takes Callie's cell number just to be nice to Sasha. Sasha is in the advanced riding team. Her arch-enemy, Jasmine, has moved to Canterwood. Jasmine hates her because she wants to be the best.
Jessica is carrying on the legend of Canterwood Crest perfectly. It is so exciting. The horse facts are 95% correct, and thats from a 10 year old who has a 7 year old Quarter Horse and shows at "B" rated shows. A horse lover will really enjoy the series. Can't wait for the next book!

Even though my 10-yr old doesn't ride a horse, she loves these books. She is an "A" student, an athlete, loves animals and is friends with most of the girls in her class, but these books seem to provide just the right amount of drama for her. I like the fact that she doesn't burn through them in a couple days like she does with other collections. Whether it is the sophistication of the writing or that she enjoys them enough to slow down a bit, I'm not sure.

Let me start off by telling you how wonderful these books are. It tells about a girl who has trouble fitting in. It is a great book with a spoonful of drama that will leave any girl full and happy.
