Behind the Eyes of Dorian Gray, August 15, 2007
This review is from: Behind the Eyes of Dorian Gray (Hardcover)
Vociferous readers looking for light summertime entertainment will enjoy Ms. Carpenter's "sequel" to the literary classic, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Ms. Carpenter's leading character, Rachael Lafferty, unwittingly sets free the body, soul and heart of that long-time villain, Dorian Gray, when she purchases first his family home and then the infamous portrait of the man himself. Unexpected discoveries lead to unexpected and unsurpassed pleasures as author and apparition learn to live together.
References to Oscar Wilde's novel are rampant in the opening pages of the book, giving the reader just enough insight into the pre-existing storyline to appreciate the premise of newer story. Indeed, so intriguing is the initial concept (carried to an equally far-fetched conclusion in this novel), that readers will likely run to their local library to check out Picture for a further Victorian escape.
Be the need to revisit high school English Lit as it may, Ms. Carpenter's presentation of the misunderstood Gray and his modern-day love interest teems with sexual tension and the obligatory suspension of disbelief. Readers will find themselves rooting for the star-crossed lovers, while booing those who would see the unlikely pair permanently separated.
A pleasure to read, and startlingly refreshing look at love across time, space and place, Behind the Eyes of Dorian Gray makes us believe in ghosts and the possibilities of loving them.
About the author: Ms. Carpenter resides in the Ohio Valley with her husband and daughter. Together, the family rides horses, enjoys movies soundtracks and cheer on their favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
