This rollicking, ribald account is one insiderâs view of the golf course management industry. Thrice betrothed and divorced, Steve Hunter is a jaded and battle-scarred veteran of the profession and subsequent matrimonial dissolution wars. His comedic portrayal of the inevitable collision between career responsibilities and common domestic expectations calls to question the worthiness of his occupation, golfers, his children, and the opposite sex as he strives to cope with all of them. âI think childbirth and parenting give you the same emotional effect as does holing out from the edge of the rough for a double eagle, only to learn you nutted that shot with someone elseâs ball,â he opines.
Scott Simpson, author of Behind the #$%*& Green, was hired as the Director of Golf for the world-renowned golf course retirement community of Sun City West, Arizona in 2004 to oversee the operations of its seven golf courses. He was named Golf Operations and Marketing Manager shortly thereafter. He was elected to the Arizona Golf Association's Board of Governors in 2006 and re-elected in 2009.
Desiring to get back to the mountains, he was hired in December of 2010 as the General Manager of the Laramie Country Club in Wyoming, and began his duties in this role in February of 2011.
Scott Simpson his career in the public sector and worked 21 years for the Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation Department. In a statewide study of the golf industry in 1991, the University of Colorado's School of Business found that two courses under his direction in Colorado Springs were the #1 and #7 most played courses in Colorado.
In 1995, he accepted a position as Director of Operations with Premier Golf International. He was a featured speaker on Golf Course Management at the National Recreation and Parks Association's annual convention in 1996. In 1997 he founded his own golf course management and consulting firm, Sunlinx Inc. He wrote the first edition of Behind the #$%*& Green, a humorous book about life in the golf course management industry, in 2003. The 2010 ebook version is a revised, 2nd edition, ISBN 978-1-4524-8380-1.
Not to be confused with the Tour player sharing the same name, Mr. Simpson was recognized in June of 2009 as one of the twenty "Most Admired Golf Course Operators" in the world by Golf Inc. Magazine, a leading golf industry trade publication, after being nominated for this distinction by the Arizona Golf Association.
Presently writing in his spare time, he lives in not-so-quiet desperation with two judgmental parrots, two freeloading dogs, one useless cat and a bipolar putter.
