She gives brief explanations and commentaries about social convention and background, and then steps out of the way and lets the women tell their own stories, so that by the end of the book you really feel acquainted with Japanese life and culture.

This is an excellent, extremely interesting book on Japanese women's lives! You will thoroughly understand Japan lifestyle, culture, work ethic, opportunities, marriage, family, basically all aspects of women's lives in Japan. You will feel immersed in what life is like for Japanese women and understand them better through this book. Although it was written in the 1980's by an American that lived there, you get a very good understanding of the Japanese culture and apply it to modern day life. Read it!
