Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Part of the History in Literature series, this book will be read by teens who love Morrison's novel and want to learn more about its historical and cultural setting and connections to Morrison's personal experience, as well as by those who are interested in literary analysis. The bold type used throughout for special vocabulary interrupts the flow of text (and it is certainly unnecessary for an audience familiar with Morrison's work), and notes for the interesting quotes would have been helpful. The page design, however, is inviting, with lots of boxed insets, photos, and subheads, and the talk about themes such as the search for love, identity, and racial pride will spark discussion and stimulate teens to read the novel or savor it again. A time line, a bibliography, and a lengthy glossary defining the boldface terms are appended. An effective book that will deepen and strengthen the connections between history and literature for students. Hazel Rochman
