4.0 out of 5 stars A Sountrack To A Bygone Era!, March 11, 2002
By
Ian Creamer (Dublin,Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Behind Music (Audio CD)
...[We] have another brilliant release from one of that country's biggest groups The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. At first I thought this was a pretty dumb name for a group-but then when you hear the music it all seems so apt. Basically the group have recreated the sounds of various groups from the late 60's, early 70's. From the first psychedelic strains of the opening guitar riff it's all like a journey back in time.... Each track shows incredible diversity-it goes from pretty active vibrant rock sons to slower sensitive tracks that use lots of orchestration. Lyrically it may not be the best album-it seems to come from the Gallagher school of lyrics and you can play the game of completing each obvious rhyming couplet before you actually hear them. Still though... at least this group are writing in their 2nd language. Anyway finding fault with the lyrics is being extremely picky cos there's so much good music on this album that it overrides all other impressions. Some tracks like the low-key 3rd track sound like The Beta Band-this is after 2 opening hard rocking tracks. Track 4 sort of reminds me of Ocean Colour Scene and the rehashed music they've produced for a long time-only this group do it much better. Track 5 starts of with a Procul Harem organ and a melody and vocals.... Track 6 the aptly named "21st Century Rip Off" has that Stones guitar riff-God it even has Stones type vocals and harmonies.

"Tonight" is a beautiful track that sits comfortably with any era. It's a gentle ballad with a simple gorgeous piano melody. Then these electric strings shimmer in the background-it's one of those instantly recognisably classic tracks. The rhythm of track 8 is so like The Beatles "Come Together" it's almost unreal. It's a simple song but once again the hook is one that has real immediacy to it. My favourite track is "Nevermore"-which is unusual as of all the tracks it seems the least 60's to me.... The next track will instantly remind you of Stone Roses-from the Squiresque guitar to the vocals-oh and add in some really cool keyboards-it's a stonking track. Sorry to keep name checking each track but it's so musically diverse that it's impossible to describe this c.d. accurately in a few lines! Track 11 slows things down with lots of classical acoustic guitar and more hook-lines to die for. The instrumental break of guitar and keyboards is to die for. I'm not that keen on the last few tracks especially the sound of the synths on tracks 12-it's just too accurate a reprisal of the 60's. Still there's enough on this c.d. for fans of all types of retro music...

Modern Rock in a Classic Rock style.Like Guided by Voices with better sound(much better). Or maybe a psychedelic version of Sloan. It reminds me of the Pretty Things Parachute album. The Kinks too. The kind of album those people don't make anymore. More fun than Wilco! Well worth $25.

5.0 out of 5 stars In front of 'Behind the Music', February 20, 2002

Buy this album.

Can't?

Borrow it, then.

Can't?... it.

The bottom line is you need 'Behind the Music' in your live.

What does it sound like?

Well they sure know their classic sixties influences: The Who, Stones, Stooges, Big Star, Pink Floyd etc. But the thing is they do it better than anybody else.

The standout tracks are:'Mind The Gap' is a nod to the Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here'; '21st Century Rip Off' winks knowingly toward Big Star's 'When My Baby's Beside Me' and 'Keep The Line Moving' provides a bloody great bearhug for The Who's 'Magic Bus'

Remember they're Swedish and they rock like gods!!
