In this 1992 PBS children's series about artistic creation, Julie Taymor, director of theater and film, shares a live theatrical production with a young audience. Children 7 and older (along with their parents) will enjoy this highly informative and well-paced presentation of what makes live theater so special. Taymor emphasizes imagination in the preparation and production of a play, which in this instance is Shakespeare's The Tempest. She presents examples of the imaginative handiwork for the production; the costumes, the sets, the lighting, the sound, and the interaction between the director and the actors convey the emotions of the characters. Taymor's colorful treatment of Shakespeare brings alive a text that might otherwise not engage a youthful audience. Behind the Scenes is an information-packed "making of" type of entertainment that helps explain and demystify artistic creation to kids. Most of all, such entertainment can inspire that artistic creation in the child viewer. --Bryony Angell

This in-depth look into a directors inspiration is a great educational tool for a theater educator. It also serves as a tool for other directors to get to the real meaning and understanding of what a director does. I am so glad to find some information on Julie Taymor, one of todays formost visionary directors. I congradulate the producers of this video! Way to go! Great Video with the exception that it is too short...we want more!

'Behind the Scenes' is an excellent teaching tool. I have shown it to both elementary and middle school students- they are captivated by Taymor's video. It shows all the elements of theatre; costume design, puppetry, movement, make-up, acting, set and lighting design and direction. This helps my students understand the importance of working both on and off stage and using skills other than acting. A must for any theatre educator!
