3.0 out of 5 stars Not yet.....but she's getting there
Reba's early work on Mercury basically highlights her growth as an artist and shows her experimenting with her different talents. The main reason to seek this album out is the self-penned "Reasons," one of Reba's rare forays into songwriting. The rest of the album is listenable, and is one of her better efforts with Mercury.

So sings a longing Reba in what has to be one of the finest songs she has ever recorded! I can listen to that one song and never get tired. If you want to learn how to sing you should hear Reba on that song "You Really Better Love Me After This". Its a song that would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!!!!! This album is worth a mind of diamonds for that song alone!! Reba if you're reading this, please, please, resurrect this song and put it in your live show! Its the most beautiful, haunting song you've ever done!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING!!!, September 22, 2005

One reviewer pointed out that Reba's time at Mercury was a waste. I disagree. She recorded some of her best songs there and this album is proof. It contains some stunning Reba stuff with tasteful (not loud) production values. Today Reba is loud and over the top. On this CD though she doesn't oversell and realizes that too much of a good thing can hurt. She wisely understates here and thats what makes this one so endearing! I love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional country for fans of Reba - and Tanya, March 6, 2004
This review is from: Behind the Scenes (Audio CD)
This is the most traditional-sounding of Reba's Mercury releases - not quite as traditional as My kind of country and the three albums that followed it, but close. It was Reba's last album of original material for the label, so perhaps she recorded just what she wanted. (Yes, I know about the album Reba Nell McEntire, but that was a compilation of unreleased recordings, released after Reba had left Mercury.) The album contains a great mix of up-tempo songs and ballads.

Nickel dreams is a song that inspired Tanya Tucker, who never got around to recording the song but used the title for her autobiography (a book definitely worth reading). Tanya said that the song could have been written about her.

Reba wrote Reasons, which is a song full of the kind of metaphors that traditional country fans enjoy but that often alienate the uncommitted, who don't always understand. To explain - Reba prefers steaks to hot dogs because steaks are better quality. Reba wants only the best.

There are many other fine songs here but, being an end-of-contract album, it probably wasn't promoted as much as it might have been. Nevertheless, this is a fine album that all fans of Reba's traditional country albums should seek out.

This is an excellent CD from her Mercury years and I would stand it up against her mediocre 90s material any day, any how, any time!!!

Every one was commenting on the song "You Really Better Love Me After This" so I ordered this and I got it today and all I can say is "they weren't wrong". This has to absolutely be the best song that Reba has ever recorded. It makes everything she has done before or after pale!!! The song is hauntingly brilliant and Reba's vocal is so spectactular that naturally anything is going to pale. One keeps listening to it over and over again and is held spellbound!! This is the main reason to buy this CD. What I can't figure out is why Mercury didn't have the foresight to release this as a single or why Reba doesn't include it in her concert performances because it is truly amazing! I'd give her ten thousand standing ovations just to hear her do this one!! What a song! The rest of the album aint bad either.

Go with this one people!! This is Reba at her very, very best and what she does with "Are You Really Gonna Love After This" is superior to anything she did before or since!! This is classic stuff!! I also like the western swing of "Needles and Pins"!! "Nickel Dreams" is achingly beautiful and "There Aint No Future in This" proves that Reba has no peer in singing those traditional country tunes!! Oh man, great stuff!!

Man, when given the right material can this woman sing better than anyone I've ever heard!! I agree with the consensus on this one that the best thing on this CD is the song "You Really Better Love Me After This". I'd give anything to hear Reba do this one live!!
