I'm a diehard fan of Downton Abbey and have the booksThe Chronicles of Downton Abbey and The World of Downton Abbey. This book, Behind the Scenes at Downton Abbey, is just a rehash of the other 2 books I mentioned previously. The only new thing in this book is that it has a limited amount of photos of the new upcoming Season 4. The narrative gives the same story as the other 2 books (how Julian Fellowes came to creating the series, how the actors were selected, the clothes, the locations, etc. etc. etc.). The book is printed on good quality paper, the photos are clear, and all in color. If I had seen this book in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it. I was debating on whether to return it, but since it does have a few photos of the new season, I will keep it. If you already have both or either of the books I mentioned, save your money and don't purchase this one. If you are new to Downton Abbey or do not have the other 2 books, then, yes, this will be a fine addition to your home library.

AWESOME BOOK for Downton Abbey's fans
It delves into the secret workings behind the show (the kitchen, the staff, the waredrobe and jewelary, the make-up, the hair, filiming on different locations )
It gives so many details and funny quotes by the directors, the writer, and the actors and how they felt acting in such a magnificant castle like Highclere
I discovered so many things (the scenes in the kitchen and staff were filmed at Ealing Studios and were reconstructed \ some of the ladies' dresses where some vintage pieces recreated and remade\ the new blender was a vintage piece ordered from ebay , a really old one from the twenties!! The dog Isis was so in love with the actor Allen Leech that he was told not to pay attention to her or she would leave Lord Granthem and run to him lool !! )
It was full of details and pictures and maps
its like a complete guide
It also shows how much hard work the staff and cast go through to produce such a beautiful show
I highly recommend it !

If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, you will really enjoy this book. Never again will you ask why each season is "too short". Oh my goodness, the work that goes into each episode! Details, details and more details. I loved reading about the costume designs, the make-up and the hair styling. This book is sort of like everything you ever wanted to know about this international sensation.

I've always liked "the look" and stories of Downton Abbey, the companion books are "must haves" for anyone who's a fan of the series.
One reviewer writes that there's not much information that isn't in the first two books as a complaint- I like the way that "Behind the Scenes" is just that- a look at what goes on behind the camera. There's some repetition of detail from the other books but a lot of new background material that a fan, or even a person just interested in the period, will really appreciate. Downton is a good series and a book like this really helps you to appreciate the enormous amount of work involved.
Behind the Scenes doesn't really give anything away on the upcoming 4th season (a few "who is that?" photos is about all) - it just covers all four seasons with a great amount of detail.
If you've already gotten The World of Downton Abbey and The Chronicles of Downton Abbey get this book, you'll love it too. The same level of detail and beautiful photography- any fan will want this book!

I had hoped for something more personal from the actors. The backstage technicalities is not what I wanted. I guess I was mislead by the description. The costume section is good. Also didn't like the information on Season 4, which has just started. I suggest spoiler alerts (even the photos give away information).

Update: 1/30/14 - I've now read the book and was very pleased at the inside information and I did indeed learn more (though not a lot) about the actors themselves. It could've had more for my taste, but I definitely enjoyed it and read it through in two sittings. Behind the Scenes at Downton Abbey

The BBC series just keeps improving with each new season and the accompanying books are frosting on the cake. They share insights behind the scenes of this wonderful epic TV series.
