Book Description

There’s something hidden behind the walls of the hurricane damaged house Jolie bought in her New Jersey beach town. Something someone seems willing to kill for. After Jolie and Scoobie find a small sack of jewelry as they do a mold attack on her bungalow, Jolie is pursued by a purse thief and a burglar. But the guy she’s most worried about is the one who left an elderly auctioneer dead on her porch swing. In between appraising houses and planning a fundraiser for the food pantry (can you say liquid string contest?), Jolie tries to figure out if there is more stolen bounty around town. Is the feared killer the same person who burned some vacant houses, or the as-yet unmasked Peeping Tom? And are they willing to kill again to get to the hidden riches?
Her friends and local police warn her to butt out, but that’s just encouragement for a woman who likes to get to the bottom of things. Jolie wrestles with fear as she tries to get her cat, Jazz, to feel at home in the new house. Maybe an unexpected visitor can be a substitute for Aunt Madge’s golden retrievers.
And then there’s her love life. Jolie also needs to decide if she really wants to get back with her former boyfriend, Ocean Alley Press reporter George Winters. Or are feelings for someone else trying to get her attention?

From the Author

The idea for this book played in my mind for months and finally made it to a first draft. Sometimes I think that's when I really start writing. This is the second book in the series that touches on life at the Jersey shore after Sandy. So many people are dealing with storm-damaged homes, it seemed Jolie should share in the experience. There is the usual silly fundraiser for the food pantry, and a couple of Jolie's friends have a bigger role here. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Cozy That Swept Me Away To A Place I Love December 29, 2013
By Saved
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jolie Gentile, that lovable sleuth, never disappoints. She’s the protagonist in Elaine Orr's Jolie Gentil Cozy Mystery Series. It takes place in and around Ocean Alley, a fictitious town on New Jersey's coast.

In BEHIND THE WALLS, Jolie stumbles into a mystery and a murder when she buys a chest of drawers from an auctioneer for her newly purchased home blocks from the Shore. A drawer is missing, and that’s not all. Jolie encounters smooth-talking Clive Dorner, fresh from the city and hoping to scarf up bargain homes in Sandy’s wake. Meanwhile, when Jolie and Scoobie find hidden treasures behind a wall in her new home, the plot thickens.

In addition to Jolie, there are the usual cast of characters I've grown to love—Aunt Madge, the cranky Sergeant Morehouse, Scoobie, Lester, and George, Jolie’s erstwhile flame. And I won’t soon forget Elaine Orr’s depiction of the Jersey Shore after Hurricane Sandy, bruised but not beaten, a character in its own right, adding a strong sense of place to this series. Of course my favorite character is Jolie Gentile, real estate appraiser with a facile mind and sparkling wit who cannot let go once she’s gotten hold of a mystery.

Adding to the character list is a memorable cast of animals including Pebbles the skunk (devoid of scent glands, thanks be) who befriends a homesick Jazz, Jolie's cat. But the animals in Behind The Walls aren't just window-dressing—they reflect what Jolie’s feeling and have a special role to play toward the end of the story.

BEHIND THE WALLS is light, captivating, entertaining and wonderfully written. It swept me away to a place I love. Throughout the book, I could hear the waves and the gulls and taste the taffy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun/Scary times in Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy January 29, 2014
By Lynn
Format:Kindle Edition
Animal lovers as well as mystery readers will enjoy the latest in the Jolie Gentil mystery series. You won't believe the new pet that Jolie adopts! There is lots of action and fun and I stayed up all night reading it. I have read all of the books in this mystery series; have enjoyed them all; but this is my favorite. Fires, murders and craziness! And you won't guess "who dun it?" It is just good clean fun! You won't be disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind the Walls December 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This cozy series has such fun characters. And they are not shallow--Scoobie, for example could be the stereotypical clown but instead is very complex. His reactions cannot be easily predicted. Jolie has working relationships with people who sometimes drive her crazy. "Behind the Walls" has a great plot and several interesting subplots. I highly recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Jolie mystery! November 25, 2013
By Diane
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all the Jolie books, and I like this one as much as the others. I wasn't sure how the story would go with Jolie moving out of the B&B, but the house she bought and its "problems" work well. The pets make me laugh, and so did the fundraiser for the food pantry Jolie runs. The mystery kept me guessing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read May 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked this character (Jodie) and the mystery had me stumped because I didn’t guess who done it. Actually there were several persons who did several different things, so that was a plus. However there were so many characters that I had difficulty keeping them straight and the book seemed to meander along at a pace that was slower than I would like. In fairness this was a book that was part of a series and perhaps if I had started with the first one, I wouldn’t have been so confused by all the characters. All in all a good read and I would read another. 4 stars

I really enjoyed all the Jolie Gentil mysteries. They are funny, but still mysterious. It might be because I'm from the Jersey Shore.

I love this series by Elaine Orr. .
Characters are interesting, and the stories always hold my interest.

I usually prefer historical mysteries but make an except of Jolie Gentil. It's a nice, small town story set in New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

More About the Author

Elaine L. Orr writes fiction and nonfiction and introduced the Jolie Gentil cozy mystery series in 2011. Elaine created a setting she likes (an east coast beach town) and a profession that would let Jolie meet a lot of people and have the opportunity to get into a lot of trouble (real estate appraising). And friends, lots of friends. The first book in the series is "Appraisal for Murder," then "Rekindling Motives." "When the Carny Comes to Town" was published in February and "Any Port in a Storm" was out in September 2012. "Trouble on the Doorstep" and Behind the Walls debuted in 2013.

Other books include "Secrets of the Gap," set in Bath, England, home of the astonishing Roman Baths that have been excavated since the late 1870s. It's a wonderful site with ancient and modern mysteries. "Biding Time" is the story of young Frank Myers, nephew of his namesake who was MIA in Vietnam. Geared to a young adult audience, "Biding Time" has appeal for all. It was one of five finalists in the National Press Club's 1993 fiction contest, the club's first.

Elaine belongs to several book clubs and is a regular attendee at the Midwest Writers Workshop in Muncie, Indiana and Magna Cum Murder. She has studied writing at the University of Maryland, Georgetown University School of Continuing Education, the Writer's Center of Bethesda, Maryland, and the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival.

Elaine was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Maryland. She moved to the Midwest in the mid-1990s and met her husband in a writers' group in an Iowa library. She and her husband, Jim Larkin, live in Illinois. To learn more, visit her web site at www.elaineorr.com or www.elaineorr.blogspot.com. You can email her at elaineorr55@yahoo.com.
