Behold the Mystery is a ten chapter, 200 page book on the Mass. Using the Bible as the backbone for this work, Hart explains the significance of topics such as tradition, priesthood, and community, to name a few. At the end of each chapter are four questions for both reflection and discussion. These can be used privately or in a group study, but each question really makes you stop and think. At the end of the book are two useful appendices. One appendix contains Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), which are good for answering common questions of objections people have related to the Mass. The other appendix, "Ten Ways to Get More out of Mass," is solid gold advice, which I hope to take to heart and apply each time I go to Mass.

Chapter Five on priesthood was hands-down my favorite as it provided both Biblical background for the priesthood and an eye-opening reality of the current priestly vocation. He writes, "The priesthood of Jesus Christ is an exercise in self-mastery and is rooted in deep mystery. It is enigmatic and often misunderstood. It has both a practical and a mystical dimension – earthly in its demands and ethereal in its directives." In this chapter, he describes the priest as a servant, as the sacrifice, and as a sinner. We too often put our priests on pedestals, but we have to remember that they our human too. This ties into his last major point of helping our priests. He says that we not only need to pray for them daily, whether we like them or not, but also assist them with other parish duties. For example if you have a finance background, offer assistance in that way. "The best way for our priests (and religious) to keep their primary vocations primary is for them to be healthy spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Wonderfully written book with humor and intellect as well as deep spirituality. You will see with new eyes all the many layers of meaning and beauty that are in the Mass. The Eucharist, once understood, is what convinced me to convert from Protestant to Catholic.
Going to "church" without going to Mass is like having a snack instead of a wonderful nourishing meal.
You will love this book and want to give a copy to any one who thinks that the Mass is boring.

I have used many materials BY Mark Hart for my PSR (CCD) classes and in preparing the young church of today for Confirmation. He is amazing, reaches those who he is speaking too. Easy to understand. I say why use a $50.00 word when a $.50 gets the same meaning across? His latest book will give you many Ahh Moments. The questions at the end of each chapter are great for individual reflection or as an aid in a church book study. If this is the 1st book you purchase by Mark, you will not be disappointed and you will be excited to read his other books. You will NOT be disappointed.

Mark Hart's book, "Behold the Mystery" not only provides a deeper understanding of the Mass, but inspires me to continue to look for more in my faith then one hour a week.

Mark's inspiration and insights in this book provides an enlightening look at the many amazing blessings and gifts that come through Mass. Also taking time to learn, read and know more as explained in the book gives me a greater appreciation of all the intricate parts of the Mass.

After each chapter, the questions for reflection and discussion make the journey to read this book complete. Also the FAQ and section of ten ways to get more out of Mass are helpful. The book is laid out with wonderful chapters on different topics of the Mass. Easy to read, understand and learn as Mark shares so much. And of course Mark's personality and story telling adds to the joy of this book.

I read it loud and clear, as Mark says, "the Mass isn't lacking; we are."

Thanks for providing the theology, tools, tips, touches throughout your book to make Mass even more enriching.

Mark Hart is a true master of the art of making complicated Catholic teachings & doctrines easy & understandable in plain English. "Behold the Mystery" is no exception. Mark breaks down the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, so that newly baptized Catholics, cradle Catholics, reverted Catholics can all understand the beauty, grandeur & holiness of the source & summit of our faith. Keep writing these books, Mark, because I'll keep reading them. God bless.

Beautifully written, instructional and awe inspiring. Mark Hart touches your heart, soul and mind and opens them up to a deeper understanding and appreciation of this great, unfathomable, and unending gift from God that is the Catholic Mass. Chapter five alone, on the priesthood, should be required reading for every parishioner in the U.S., indeed throughout the world. John Vlastelin
