Book Description

December 10, 2000
Szukalski was not only a prolific artist in a number of media but also an original thinker. In Behold!!! The Protong, he posits a theory that all languages derive from a single source, the protong. With selections from over 40,000 illustrations related to Zermatism, the book explores the universal search for humankind’s original language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behold Indeed, October 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Behold the Protong (Paperback)
All I can say is, get your hands on this as fast as you can. The illustrations alone are indescribably beautiful - meticulously drawn in a style you will never forget. Philosophically, there is much to chew on here, literally the life-work of an obvious eccentric genius. This is NOT P.C. material by any means, much of it veering dangerously close to what many would label racism. This, however, makes the work no less intriguing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Place To Start - Szukalski Is Unclassifiable, December 2, 2005
This review is from: Behold!!! the Protong (Paperback)
Szukalski was a genius. He may not have been completely sane, but he was a genius. His artistic abilities are absolutely unchallengable: look at these sculptures and try to find their equal anywhere. He could imagine the unimaginable and then create it in stone or bronze or plaster. The great sin is that so much of his work is lost due to political upheaval. Likewise, his illustrations are exactingly obsessive representations of his great theories: Zermatism! Protong! Yetisynin! He was utterly convinced of his ideas, and he makes forceful arguments for them: if you are convinced of their truth, I would advise you to seek professional psychiatric help.

But: whether or not there's even a shred of truth to his (admittedly cranky) theories, they are a fascinating expression of a completely unique character, one you should discover. If you value quirky genius, Szukalski's will keep you happily enthralled for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars a deep dive into folly and genius, April 28, 2008
This review is from: Behold!!! the Protong (Paperback)
I''ll make it brief:

Are you a strong enforcer of politically correct statements?

Are you scared of outlandish ideas?

If you answered yes to either one of the above, then move on, and be happy (there is plenty for you elsewhere).

If, on the other hand, you are a mad seeker of truth, and I mean MAD, and you would visit the wildest minds of the ages to learn what you want to know, buy a copy of Protong. You will learn something new even by skimming the text and looking at the drawings before you go to bed at night: guaranteed.
