Sonically Superior Mic Preamps

All XENYX mixers have one thing in common – great-sounding, high headroom XENYX mic preamps. These state-of-the-art mic pres represent a major step in the evolution of audio technology – and they can easily hold their own, even when compared to the most expensive stand-alone mic preamps. XENYX preamps offer a staggering 130 dB of dynamic range, with a bandwidth that extends from below 10 Hz to well above 200 kHz. Armed with these outstanding mic preamps, XENYX mixers provide such transparent, crystal-clear performance you just might think someone upgraded your mics while you weren’t looking.

Sublimely Musical British EQ

The British consoles of the 1960s and ‘70s changed the sound of rock and roll – without them the British Invasion might not have happened. Those legendary mixing desks soon became the envy of engineers and producers all over the world. The channel EQ on our XENYX mixers is based on that very same circuitry, allowing you to imbue signals with incredible warmth and detailed musical character. Even when applied generously, these equalizers exhibit sweet forgiveness and superb audio quality.

Professional sound quality, our legendary XENYX mic preamps, British-style EQs and rugged reliability make XENYX 502 ideal for both your live gigs and recording. Try one on today – we have one available in your size!

The Ins and Outs

The 5-input, 2-bus XENYX 502 with XENYX mic preamp can accommodate either a dynamic or condenser microphone. The 2-band British EQ is famous for its warm, musical sound. Play music between sets via the RCA CD/Tape Inputs (main mix or control room/phones assignable) and record your performance to an outboard recording device via the RCA outputs.

I am rapidly becoming a huge fan of Behringer. Their products are very inexpensive yet are of top quality. This mixer is another example of that rule.

The mixer is solid and has a *superlative* sound - or should I say LACK of sound - it's completely noiseless. Tone controls work wonderfully and the unit is solid, easy to work, and a true bargain at around $40. (I *really* like having an XLR input for my microphone.) I only have three small points that keep this from being a perfect machine:

1. I'd like the output jacks to be on the BACK of the unit rather than on the top. When I have everything plugged in it my cables stick up all over the place. It ends up being rather unwieldy. I bought this unit because I thought it would be a space-saver; it would be except that all my cables sprout up from the top of it.

2. No rubber feet. I put this on a hard table and it slid around a bit. It physically rattled some too, since the table is not perfectly flat. Add the sprouting up cables and you get an unwieldy unit that slides around the table and can rattle. The feet are easy to fix, however - go to your local hardware store and buy some stick-on rubber feet.

3. The blue LED power indicator is way too bright. It's almost distracting and can actually make it hard to see/look at the board. A more subtle LED (red, yellow, green) would work just fine, thanks, no need to wow us with the latest Blue LED technology.

Other than that, if you're looking for an inexpensive mixer with an amazing sound and feature set, this is the unit for you. Highly recommended.

This is an awesome unit. I HIGHLY recommend it! Quality is supreme! I'd say the quality is on par with Mackie! The 1/4 inch jacks are rock solid, the metal frame is extremly sturdy and it is dead silent. This is one of the best purchases I've made for my home studio. I'm sure it has the quality to handle gigs as well with no problem. It's 'beefy' and solid in every way. I cannot believe this was only $45. I don't know how they do it for that price. I run my guitar in stereo, my keyboard in stereo and the stereo tape input lets me run my PC into it as well, and I STILL have the mic input if I need it! Just great! Highly recommended! Well done Behringer!!!

It's small, it's compact and it works! And what a bargain price..I actually when back and bought the 802 for the band rehearsals and use the 502 for the recording studio. For amateurs this is a good starting point of getting familiar with using mixers. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the instruction are poorly written; it's like two pages..I just had to experiment. Yet, it's a bargain and I'm pleased.

I was very happy with the quality of the sound, low noise, etc. Very nice engineering. Unfortunately, they got some of the easy stuff very wrong. No on/off switch, as many others have noted. Also, the power supply connector fits very loosely into the mixer and comes out easily in a gig situation (bumps, floor vibration, etc.) The connector pins on the power supply connecting into the mixer are unbelievably thin - like some guy worked it up on his breadboard and then just called that the final product. The connector is similar to the old round connectors between a keyboard or mouse to a PC before they all went to USB, only way, way more fragile. (I never bent one of those in my life.) So after owning it for 6 weeks, the connector worked loose during a gig, and I lost sound. Which is annoying. But worse, I reached from the front to plug it in (it plugs into the rear) and didn't get it in quite straight. I bent one of the paper-thin pins. When I went to straighten it with a tweezers, it broke right off. It's impossibly thin - I would have to hire a jeweler or something to solder it back on.

Of course, it's a special design and you can't go back to Amazon or any store and find a Behringer power supply. So I found a local authorized service center through the Behringer website, but I'm sure I'll have to pay as much for that replacement power supply as I did for the whole mixer. In fact, I had to buy a new mixer anyway (NOT Behringer) because I had a gig the next (weekend) night and could not get a replacement power supply in time. So, I really did pay the price for a new mixer, because I had to actually get a new one. If I want my Behringer to be useful, I'll have to pay through the nose I'm sure to get a replacement power supply.

The unit is overall really good quality, does a great job for what it is. I've been using it for the past couple months to record & playback of voice and guitar. I don't notice any added noise while using my studio monitor headphones. The gain sounds clean, I haven't had any problems with over-modulation. The 2 track is great, and lets me actually use this as a 2 directional device (Playback, and recording without actually moving around cables.) It's been a big help patching everything up to my computer.

My only gripe about the product, and it's a pretty serious gripe is the power connection is junk. It's a proprietary connector that looks like an S-Video connector, a very poor design. The plug doesn't stay in place, it'll slip in but it wiggles around and disconnects easy. The slightest movement to the mixer will cause the power to cut and surge. It causes random surges through my audio connections making speakers pop and affecting sound quality and ruining recordings. This could damage expensive audio gear, costing you many times what this device is worth. The connector is a serious flaw, I'd consider the product defective there needs to be a recall. If you do buy it, be very very careful around the power plug. May god help you if you have a cat.
