Jorgen Aase is the programmer behind EnergyXT, and it's an amazing piece of work. I started using it back in 2004 when it was still version 1. It was my favorite platform for quickly building music and trying out ideas. I love the modular view. If you want to try out a new VST, the modular view in EnergyXT makes it faster and easier to patch it in and get it up and running that any other platform I know of.

I'm impressed by the synthesizer and guitar amp in version 2. They both sound great and are very efficient with the cpu. If you have an older computer, EnergyXT is the way to go. I've got it running on an MSI wind netbook (using the Indamixx linux software) and it runs great. I can play my guitar through EnergyXT's amp and effects with 6ms latency on an atom processor!

EnergyXT's biggest weakness is live performance. It doesn't offer anything like the session view in Ableton Live that allows you to mix and match clips and loops on the fly. It's best for recording and arranging songs. You can jam to the drum machine, and then easily go back and cut and paste the parts you like. It's about as straightforward as DAWs get.

I can't speak to any advantages in the plus version, since I don't use Rewire. For the standard version, you can save a significant amount of money by downloading it direct from the energyXT website.

I paid $50 for my license in 2004, and I haven't been charged for any upgrade since. For most uses, it's a great piece of software, and Jorgen's frequent updates mean that it just gets better and better.

This thing sucks, horrible sequencer and a horrible recorder. I should have spent the money on a reason 4.0 bundle.
